With so many choices available, we picked our top 10 favorite fashion movies that you should watch (or rewatch) during your stay at home situation.
After the government has advised everyone to stay at home in an effort to slow the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic right now, the majority of the workforce is relegated to stay at home. And while a work from home setting has already been implemented for some companies, our evenings after work could become dull and monotonous in the coming days. So, just to make things a little bit interesting as you quarantine yourself from the confines of your home, here are some of our favorite fashion movies we suggest you look into.
Devil Wears Prada
Devil Wears Prada is not only a classic, but arguably it’s THE fashion movie. If you don’t even know this movie, then you’re probably not a true fashionista. The film, adapted from the bestselling book of the same name, gives us a glimpse of what it’s like to work in the cut-throat industry of fashion publishing. And thanks to Meryll Streep, a thinly veiled caricature of Vogue’s Anna Wintour, she gave us all the drama together with Anne Hathaway, who played as her assistant.
Clueless
Clueless is the 90s adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma, and up until now, this would probably be the go-to sleepover movie to be watched by teenagers. Come to think of it, its plot is about being on top featuring Cher Horowitz, the queen bee at her school. However, things just turned upside down after she gave the new girl a makeover. Will she still be on top? Well, that’s for you to know. We can already hear her screaming right now: Ugh, as if!
Ocean’s 8
If you’re looking for a really good femme fatale movie to watch, then Oceans 8 is your best bet. It’s connected to the Oceans trilogy that cast an all-male lead. So, it’s just refreshing to witness how women (starring Rihanna, Sarah Paulson, Anne Hathaway, Sandra Bullock, and Cate Blanchett, to name a few) would sophisticatedly do a proper heist. But this time, they’re acquiring every girl’s best friend: diamonds.
First Monday In May
While it’s disappointing to know that the Met Gala has been postponed indefinitely due to the global pandemic, it is the right thing to do. So, as we will be needing to wait patiently, for now, the only thing we can do is to watch this documentary, which goes behind-the-scenes of how the crème de la crème of fashion events is successfully organized every first Monday in May.
September Issue
If you’ve seen The Devil Wears Prada, then you must already have a glimpse of the world of fashion magazines. But if you really want to know what it’s like in reality, we suggest you also watch the September Issue documentary. It showcases how the American Vogue team, as well as Anna Wintour, goes about the highs and lows of closing the magazine’s biggest issue.
Confessions Of A Shopaholic
Perhaps we’ve all been a shopaholic at one point in our lives. It doesn’t matter if you spend millions or only a few thousand, as long as you are buying things more than what you need, you could be considered a shopaholic. And this movie is actually relatable as it depicts the real struggle of not swiping your card just to buy the latest designer handbag. In the movie, when Rebecca Bloomwood finally landed a job in a finance magazine, she soon realizes there is more to life than just shopping.
Sex And The City
Living in New York City is every fashion hopeful’s dream. And when you add the fact that your best friends also live in the Big Apple, well, that might just be heaven. But more than having access to the latest designer collections, Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) shows us what it’s like to be in love in the city that never sleeps while being oh-so-chic.
Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald. It’s the story of eccentric millionaire Jay Gatsby who’s notorious for throwing the most lavish and huge soireés. And to make sure that the film adaptation would live up to the novel’s description, Catherine Martin, the costume and production designer for the movie, called her many fashion industry contacts to impeccably pull it off. Brooks Brother supplied 1200 suits, Prada designed 40 dresses, and Tiffany & Co. created the diamond 1920s-era headpieces worn by Daisy, the lead female protagonist.
Crazy Rich Asians
We always love excellent Asian representation in Hollywood, so it’s just inspiring to witness an all-Asian cast take charge in this Asian-produced hit in the West. The plot shows us the gap between the ever-changing world of the west compared to the East. Rachel Chu, who’s an American-born Chinese gets engaged with Nick Young, Singapore’s most eligible bachelor coming from the nation’s wealthiest family. But will the man’s family approve, considering their conservative values?
13 Going On 30
Admit it: there was one time you said when you were in high school that you wanted to be an adult already and earn tons of money. Don’t worry, we’re all guilty as charged. 13 Going On 30 tells a story about a girl that’s transformed into a grownup overnight. While her secret desire for having a boyfriend becomes a reality, is she really ready for adulthood? Come to think of it, adulting has its own set of male-female challenges—it isn’t as easy as it looks.
