Taking over Autumn/Winter runways this year, pleats have officially made a comeback in the fashion fold. A classic trend that emphasizes ladylike sophistication, this trend have been, over and over, reinvented by designers in runways and magazine spreads. The 21st century alone holds the most unorthodox manners on bringing the aesthetic a contemporary look. Knife-pleats, to be specific, have circulated like pages and numbers jumping from one collection to another. Gone are the days of schoolgirl uniforms—from the runways, the streets is its next destination.
These pleats—micro, knife, boxed, accordion—can be quite deceiving at first glance. Its elegance and softness as it flutters with the wind can cut right through delicate blouses. Be bold with your pairings—textures, deconstructed top or blazer, oversized, fit, street—pleats can be worn with almost anything, only if you’re brave enough to. Perhaps, a trouser and in bold colors, a la Valentino? One thing’s for sure: you can do pleats as you please.
