Calling All Queens! Here Are 5 Facts About RuPaul’s Drag Race Philippines

Start your engines because “RuPaul’s Drag Race Philippines” has been officially announced. Here are 5 quick facts you need to know about the show.

At the stroke of midnight, American streaming service World of Wonder posted that the first season of “Drag Race Philippines” has officially started its productions. This is the latest addition to the global roster of the Emmy-award-winning show, with other iterations being held in Thailand, the United Kingdom, Holland, Chile, Spain and Canada. Filipino drag queens have already appeared on several seasons of the US show from Ongina (Season 1 and All Stars 5), Manila Luzon (Season 3 and All Stars 1 and 4), Jiggly Caliente (Season 4 and All Stars 6), Phi Phi O’Hara (Season 4 and All Stars 2), Vivienne Pinay (Season 5), and Rock M. Sakura (Season 12). But this is the first time that it will be held locally, putting Filipino drag culture at the forefront.

Can’t wait for epic lip-syncing battles and fashion from the show, here are 5 facts to hold you over:

FACT #1: Casting for the next Filipino drag superstar is now open!

For all aspiring glamazons, if you think you got what it takes to join the debut series, you may apply at dragraceph.com. The process involves a google form to be filled with questions such as one’s full Drag Name, official papers to be signed and uploaded, alongside proof of Identification.

FACT #2: Fifth Solomon is its acting Creative Director.

According to Miss Trans Global 2020 Mela Habijan, Fifth Solomon has been working with the franchise as Creative Director. The former Pinoy Big Brother contestant also shared that it’s been 2 years since the idea for the project first came to life.

FACT #3: Drag has a rich and deep history in the Philippines.

Local drag culture dates back to the 1500s with babaylans respecting men that are ambiguous or lady-like. In the ’60s, movies and theaters exhibited photos and roles of cross-dressers. From there on, Filipino drag queens have been standing on the tallest heels, snatching the biggest wigs, and performing in some of Manila’s colorful bars to inspire and advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community.

FACT #4: Two drag competitions are set to launch in the country!

Before Drag Race Philippines was announced, Manila Luzon also launched the casting for the reality-competition series she’ll be hosting, Drag Den. Before you go searching for drama, the drag race alum has already shown support and love that two competitions will be held in the country.

FACT#5: Fans are already nominating the host, judges, and special guests they want to see.

With the show’s cult-following it was almost immediate that fans already started calling out names online for those to be seated at the judging table. Some of the favorites so far are Vice Ganda as host, Paolo Ballesteros as the main judge, BJ Pascual for a photoshoot challenge, Actor Jon Santos as panelist, and special guesting by the queens Catriona Gray and Pia Wurtzbach.
