As the finale of this year’s first ever fashion week by the Fashion Institute of the Philippines, the pool of young designers proves plenty of fresh catch and had us hooked as we dove right into their imaginariums.
5. Joseph Palma
Reminiscent of Carolina Herrera’s classic silhouettes, Joseph Palma’s textured and avant-garde take on lady-like dressing is almost like a dream
4. Lovely Trinidad
Challenging the standards of what people deem as “ugly,” Lovely Trinidad proves everyone wrong with her experimental use of unlikely fabrics in the most beautiful silhouettes and brightest of colours
3. Mariton Villanueva
Harnessing her knowledge of natural dyeing techniques with the help of the Cordillera tribes and artisans of Philippine Natural Dye, Mariton Villanueva creates a 4-piece resorts wear collection that is beguilingly raw
2. Clarisse Gotico
Redefining the modern Maria Clara, Clarisse Gotico incorporates key details & fabrics of the terno and injects contemporary elements such as utilitarian and street ensembles without overpowering the essence of the true Filipina
1. JJ Aquino
JJ Aquino is hailed as FIP’s Designer of the Year 2019, and it’s not difficult to see why. His collection “Boloto Ko Bel” in Maranao dialect, means “Bahaghari sa Usok” which powerfully honors the trials and triumphs of the warrior weavers of Marawi in collaboration with Sinagtala PH, a non-profit organization that helps IDPs (or Internally Displaced Persons) especially women and children.
