5 Reasons Why Your Colored Hair Looks Dull…And How to Fix It!

Reduce your trips to the salon by avoiding these bad hair care habits.

Smooth, shiny, vibrant and bouncy—these are signs you have healthy hair. Otherwise, you’ve got a hair emergency you’re not aware of.

This is not a hopeless case though because there are ways to restore your colored hair’s healthy look. Here are the reasons and ways to revitalize your crown:

Reason no. 1: Rinsing with hard or hot water

Who doesn’t love a refreshing shower after a tiring day at work? Yes, water may be the culprit of lackluster hair. Hard water, for example, is high in minerals like calcium, magnesium and metallic elements. These are naturally occurring substances that can make your colored hair appear faded, dry, and dull. On the other hand, hot water can strip off the outer cuticle layer of your hair that speeds up the process of fading.

The solution: Install a shower filter to eliminate unwanted properties in hard water. When taking a hot shower, use a shower cap to protect your hair. Better yet, rinse or wash your hair with lukewarm or cold water as it can seal the hair cuticles and color of your hair.

Reason no. 2: Excessive use of heat styling tools

Other than hair coloring, you can improve your hairstyle by straightening or curling it. Like hot water, it also contributes to hair damage because of the heat it emits.

The solution:  Heat styling tools like a flat iron, blow dryer, or curling iron are fun to use because it improves the hair’s volume and look. Keep the setting at its lowest and apply a heat protectant before using any of these.

Reason no. 3: Too much sun and chlorine exposure

Summertime is the perfect chance to get your tan lines and take a dip in a swimming pool. It is also the time when the sun is most unforgiving because of its harmful UV rays. On the other hand, chlorine which is used to keep pool free of bacteria is bad for your strands because it strips off hair’s natural oil, keratin and color.

The solution: Make it a habit to apply hair care products with UV absorbers or spray hair sunscreen before heading out. To avoid chlorine from seeping into your scalp, wear a swimming cap or apply leave-in conditioner to protect your hair.

Reason no. 4: You skip regular trims

Hair in general, regardless if it is colored or not, may get damaged over time, develop split ends and becomes frizzy.

The solution: Schedule a regular hair cut, as simple as that.

Reason no. 5: Using regular shampoo and conditioner

Not all hair care products are created equal for different types of hair. So what works for natural colored hair won’t work for color-treated locks. Your dyed hair has a different composition because of the chemicals used in it.

The solution: Use color-protecting shampoo and conditioner such as the new TRESemmé Pro-Color Series. It is specifically created for salon-achieved colored hair. For colored hair, choose TRESemmé Pro-Color Series in Color Radiance that has anti-fade, color radiance boosters which make color last 2x longer.* If you have blonde or bleach-toned locks, use TRESemmé Pro-Color Series in Blonde Brilliance with purple formula that reduces brassy* hair. Both variants have jojoba oil, a natural hair moisturizer, that keeps hair smooth and shiny..

Follow these tips to achieve a vibrant and bold hair color that stays.

*with regular system use, vs. other TRESemmé system
