The greatest stories are always the ones that are a reflection of the times. While we all have different ways to cope during this quarantine, there’s no denying that this extra time we can spend for ourselves can be detrimental to our minds.

A lot of us have to stay at home, which means there’s a chance that all this extra time can lead to self-examination. This uncertainty that we feel is indeed scary because we feel the unprecedented increase of paranoia in society, especially because of social media that exposes us to misinformation, dishonest politicians, and fake news.

And with all this time of isolation, sometimes, all we need is to feel that we are not alone. So below, we list down introspective shows that will make you feel for the characters and the story. Here’s to hoping an outlet like a good tv show can help us escape from our own reality and into a world similarly like ours.

Modern Love

An unlikely friendship. A lost love resurfaced. A marriage at its turning point. A date that might not have been a date. An unconventional new family. Modern Love explores unique stories about “love in its multitude of forms–including sexual, romantic, familial, platonic, and self-love,” which are presented in eight 30-minute episodes. The Amazon series are each inspired by a real-life personal essay from the beloved New York Times column, Modern Love.

The Good Place

The Good Place is a comedy series that is both sweet and philosophical. The intrinsically philosophical show explores a fantasy town where those who have been good throughout their lives go once they have passed away. When Eleanor Shellstrop finds herself in the afterlife, she’s both relieved and surprised that she’s made it into the Good Place. But it doesn’t take long for Eleanor to realize she’s there by mistake. The show, according to a review in Rolling Stone, repeatedly argues—up to and including this final episode—that this perpetual uncertainty is part of what makes life so precious. Because as the series goes by, Eleanor becomes determined to shed her old way of life in hopes of discovering a new one in the afterlife.

Lucifer

Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar comes to live in Los Angeles. While meeting with a Detective in his nightclub, a shootout involving him and the Detective leads him to become an LAPD consultant who tries to punish people for their crimes through law and justice. And because of Lucifer’s ability to manipulate people into confessing their deepest desires and darkest secrets, he helps the LAPD Detective to take down criminals.

Black Mirror

Black Mirror is a British television anthology series created by Charlie Brooker that features speculative fiction with dark and sometimes satirical themes that examine modern society, particularly with regard to the unanticipated consequences of new technologies. The setting, which is a reflection of our near-future, explores the mind-boggling possibility of humanity as we know it.

The OA

The OA is a Netflix original story that delves into the inexplicable reappearance of Prairie Johnson. Having gone missing seven years ago, the previously blind Johnson returns home, now in her late 20s and with her sight restored. While many believe she is a miracle, others worry that she could be dangerous. The series gives a take on the possibility of different dimensions and realities.

Queer Eye

Now, a break from fictional TV shows, Queer Eye is a heart-warming reality show that follows five queer friends called the Fab Five as they transform the lives of people who need a “makeover.” Traveling around Georgia, they visit men and women who have been nominated by their friends and family to receive a little help getting their homes, fashion, grooming regime and other elements of their lives in order.
