We get it: In today’s political climate, it can be a huge challenge to speak your truth and dissent. With the onslaught of trolls and bashers lurking at every corner, it’s undoubtedly much easier to stay silent.
But as the saying goes: fortune favors the brave. We’ve rounded up some celebs who’ve chosen to use their platforms to consistently speak up in these times. Though what they’ve done is only the beginning, it doesn’t hurt to recognize their efforts
Angel Locsin
Proving that she’s an angel on Earth, the Darna actress has long been an advocate for the people. Through her humanitarian efforts, Forbes Magazine dubbed Angel as one of “Asian Heroes of Philanthropy” back in 2019.
Forbes reported that she had donated as much as P15 million to provide scholarships, protect the rights of indigenous people, and put a stop to violence against women and children.
Angel has also publicly spoken out against red-tagging (with a gorgeous red lip), raised funds for mass testing, and called out brutal police enforcement, and more.
Liza Soberano
This beauty is not just a pretty face, as Liza has long been an outspoken budding champion for women’s rights.
She’s joined round table discussions with women’s-centered youth party-list Gabriela, where she’s been red-tagged and slammed with boycott threats. Still, Liza maintains her desire to keep learning women’s issues in the country.
Recently, Liza raised her concern over the marginalized communities in lockdown, saying that “My heart bleeds for all the people who cannot afford not to go out and work.”
KathNiel
Despite being a pretty quiet couple off-screen, Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla don’t shy away when it comes to defending their causes.
When their their home network, ABS-CBN, faced closure in May 2020, the pair took over the narrative and used their influence to speak out on social media and allow their dedicated followers to speak up too.
Off social media, they’ve also joined ABS-CBN’s employees in noise brigades and rallies to call for the network’s franchise renewal.
Enchong Dee
Similar to Kathyrn and Daniel, Enchong has been a staple name when it came to defending his home network – taking to on and off social media to make impassioned speeches to his audience and in physically-distanced rallies.
He’s also spoke up during the breach of the UP-DND Accords, as Enchong has long been using Twitter to air his sentiments.
Janine Gutierrez
The Kapuso-turned-Kapamilya actress isn’t one to shy away from her sentiments too, as she recently took over headlines to dispute the ‘pasaway’ narrative that’s been accused of Filipinos.
“Masunurin at maintindihin ang Pinoy, kung meron lang sanang matinong maaasahan,” she wrote on Twitter. She also regularly updates her followers via news media retweets.
