We’re tracing back the origin of the latest fashion fad—Nets—and how celebrities and designers are making it look ultra chic for the summer season
A trend that is currently making waves in the global fashion scene ever since their debut back in SS22 is the Net. It’s the chunky knit, knotted patterns, or the scaled-down mesh—all of which gives a peek of the skin. This particular trend is perfect for the summer because of its breathability and its ability to elevate any look because of its sultry aesthetic.
The sudden surge of the Net isn’t surprising for those who have been keeping track of the latest fad seen on runway shows. Back in 2021, many dived into the hobby of crocheting since most were still in the safety of their homes. They ranged from summer tops, tote bags, and even quirky bucket hats that some still wear to this day.
Alongside crochet, an affinity for see-through pieces that resemble intimate garments were also a hit. One designer that undoubtedly made their presence known with this aesthetic is Nensi Dojaka, a London-based designer who perfected the artistry of lingerie and ready-to-wear.
Two trends that are vastly different yet merged together to produce the current fad—the Net. The crochet finish remained, but was done in various ways, as seen on Prada and Proenza Schouler. Meanwhile, the sheer look from the intimates continued on with the see-through finish of the Net.
This trend doesn’t just stay within the realm of clothing, but was spread across to all. Longchamp joined in with their Net-finished bags and its signature flap, while Bottega Veneta incorporated it with their shoes.
It’s already made it’s way to the local scene as Andi Eigenman graced the April cover with a knitted piece by Filipino designer Jerome Lorico. Meanwhile, Kim Chiu was seen sporting the trend when she made a quick getaway to the beach.
