Grease
After a romantic summer love that happened too fast, sweet new girl Sandy Dumbrowski discovers that a few months of romance doesn’t actually prove anything, especially not with the greased-up gangster Danny Zuko. At the heart of Grease‘s story is a couple figuring out their complicated feelings for each other all while dealing with peer pressure and cliques that come with high school.
We’ve all jammed to their hits like “Grease Lightning” and belted out “Hopelessly Devoted To You” while sliding down a wall for dramatic effect. It’s simply a classic and timeless film that answers the question: What are you willing to do in the name of love? Or rather, how much are you willing to change?
Mamma Mia!
My, my, how can we resist this all-time favorite film? For Sophie’s upcoming wedding, she decides to surprise her mother by secretly inviting the three men involved in her mother Donna’s past. The bride believes that one of these men is her father, who will hopefully walk her down the aisle on her wedding day. The problem? All these men believe that they were the father, which only brought confusion to both the mother and daughter.
Mamma Mia!‘s discography is incredibly memorable, with “Dancing Queen” being a staple in every Filipino household with a karaoke machine. And who could forget the timeless hit “Mamma Mia,” the go-to track of every pre-game session with the girls while getting ready for a party. Ten years after its premiere, the sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was released, bringing us back to the Greek Island Kalokairi with the music based on the songs of ABBA.
Pitch Perfect
Aspiring music producer and college freshman Becca Mitchell is persuaded to join an all-girl a capella group, the Barden Bellas. Tension arises within the girls when they take risks in their competition, which lead to cat fights, stronger relationships, and a newfound sound within the Barden Bellas, which helped the identity of their organization and Bella herself.
With two more sequels, Pitch Perfect is nothing short of a successful movie with their mashup of covers and a handful of their original songs. Some of us memorize word-for-word the Riff Off that happened in the first movie. There was a period when everyone learned Becca’s memorable “Cup Song” which she performed in her Barden Bellas audition. Jessie J’s “Flashlight” from Pitch Perfect 2 was also a hit, as it is now one of our go-to karaoke songs!
The Greatest Showman
Inspired by the legendary and ambitious real-life story of P.T Barnum, The Greatest Showman brings together the misfits and the invisible to bring them into the spotlight, making their dreams—and his dreams—come true. In focusing on his ambitions, however, he forgets the people who started it all: his wife and his two daughters.
This indeed gave us the greatest show, and the greatest soundtrack! With such an inspirational film, it’s a no-brainer that songs like “This Is Me” got us singing on the top of our lungs. Plus, with Zac Efron and Zendaya’s chemistry, their ballad “Rewrite The Stars” had us on a chokehold, with over 1M plays on Spotify. And who could ever forget the dramatic song “Never Enough,” which for sure got us belting in the shower?
Tick, Tick… Boom!
Based on the musical stageplay of the same name, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s directorial debut talks about musical playwright Jonathan Larson’s journey into the theatre industry with his musical. With Larson turning 30 soon, stuck writing his musical while working at a diner, the aspiring composer and playwright faces pressure as an artist in New York. Larson’s time is running out. What will it take for his name to be discovered in the Big Apple?
Fairly new, Tick, Tick… Boom! made its way to the spotlight with the spectacular, eclectic performance of Andrew Garfield. This film also released amazing versions of Larson’s music, including “30/90,” a mesmerizing duet with Vanessa Hudgens in “Therapy,” and the energetic bo-bo-bo-bo-“Boho Days.”
