The cookie-cutter capsule wardrobe is out. Consider these elements for a more interesting wardrobe than the usual basics

The capsule wardrobe is a carefully curated collection of clothes that are easily interchangeable to create multiple outfits. The problem? The cookie-cutter capsule wardrobes are too basic: t-shirts and tank tops of every color, two different pairs of jeans, a singular striped top, and classic white sneakers. While there’s nothing wrong with this capsule wardrobe, it does present us with a question: how is your personality showing? The fun of dressing up is incorporating your personal style, but how can you express your style with plain shirts, jeans, and white sneakers? Here are some wardrobe staples to consider to embrace your style and challenge the way you dress.

A Touch of Texture

While we all love the comfort of cotton, it’s time to explore other fabrics that could elevate your outfits. What’s interesting about texture is due to its fabric, it also creates various drapes and flow. It’s also a great way to keep your ensembles interesting if you’re going for a monochromatic. It’s not limited to the feel of fabric, by the way! Textures also create visual interest like shininess and dullness. Try mixing up your looks by adding a layer of texture for a more interesting and eye-catching ensemble.

Playing With Prints

Prints and patterns create visual interest in your outfits. From stripes, plaid, and houndstooth to animal print, they’re definitely intimidating to wear, but they create head-turning statements in your ensembles. They could be a skirt, a cardigan, shoes, or even a scarf. There are multiple ways to style prints and patterns, it’s just a matter of pairing them and strutting with confidence!

Shapes and Structure

Similar to texture, we can create structures for our outfits with the right pieces and styling to create visual interest. With varying types of fabrics, we can create shapes by matching textures and pieces. For example, a cotton top and denim jeans will resemble a rectangle, and it isn’t very appealing, is it? However, if you style a button-down cinched by the waist with an A-line skirt, you create a triangle. There are several ways to create structure in your ensemble, it’s really all about styling and bringing out the potential of every piece of clothing.
