A Deep Dive on the Reemergence of Opera Gloves

Opera gloves are the new it-accessory of the season and we’re here to trace back its sudden comeback and how you can style them

The current trends of fashion have taken a liking towards decade dressing. We started with the popular fashion of the early 2000s, which then trickled down to the minimalist finish of the 90s. Though it’s no surprise to any fashion enthusiast out there that the industry often takes inspiration from the past, there are moments when the little details of people’s regular clothing back then take us by surprise.

This one in particular had a steady climb last year, but it’s been getting more attention as stylists use this accessory to elevate the look even further. After corsets and ruffled pieces, we’re now looking at the comeback of opera gloves in the fashion scene.

The appeal

We’re going to have to trace it all back to the micro trends people had a knack on recreating. It first started with the old money aesthetic that had tennis skirts and vests, which then transitioned to the dainty coquette look that usually consisted of ruffles and bows—both showcasing a subtle high-society fashion. Though they are considered as micro trends, it goes to show the interest towards the overall look and vibe of the past.

An added factor to this trend was the release of the hit Netflix series, Bridgerton and The Crown, as they showcase such different styles yet their similarities are the societies that they portray. In a sense, these periodic series only fuel the affinity towards decade dressing in the present time, which greatly include the incorporation of opera gloves.

The comeback

We first see this accessory come into play with celebrities and personalities. Stylists would often finish off a look with gloves for two reasons: to soften a rather bold design or add a punk feel to a classic vibe. Either way, people were able to spot the trend and began infusing them in their fits for various occasions.

Opera gloves have also made numerous runway appearances for most Fall/Winter collections as seen on Dior, Moschino, and Valentino. And very recently, the Met Gala had a list of guests that wore opera gloves.

The how and where

It is quite the statement accessory to add in your daily outfits, but it can be done in a more formal setting, especially at an event happening in the evening. You can opt to wear your trusty little black dress and pearls for a classic look, but for an edgier feel, it’s best to go all out by wearing a button-down that’s layered underneath a corset, a mini skirt, and some thigh-high boots for the ultimate trendy ensemble.
