Admittedly for the obsessed and overwhelmed, skincare can get a little complicated when there are numerous steps to do with products that have ingredients that you don’t understand. When you feel like layering serums, creams, and face masks are too much, go back to the basics. Each skincare routine is unique, but certain steps should never be missed.

Even if you haven’t put on a spot of makeup throughout the day, these are still the core skincare basics to a daily beauty routine.

Cleanser

The first step to any skincare routine is washing your face. A cleanser can help remove any dirt and excess oil that end up on the face naturally throughout the day. By picking a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type will prep the skin without stripping its natural properties. It’s basic, but it’s important.

Toner

A personal favorite, toner is the follow-up care your skin needs after cleansing. There’s a satisfying feeling when you see how the formulation can remove any dirt or spots that the cleanser has missed. The refreshing feeling that your skin is in after the toner also helps your whole routine thrive. It balances your skin’s pH level and keeps it moisturized to help the skin absorb the other products.

Moisturizer

When we’re constantly spending time indoors with airconditioned air, our skin can dry out. Our skin consists of 64% water and we need to constantly quench its thirst. Moisturizing the skin isn’t all about keeping it smooth and soft. It’s also a vital step to maintain your skin’s healthy cells and to protect it from irritation. It’s proven to keep your skin youthful and plump to achieve a beautiful complexion.

When applying facial moisturizer, K-beauty taught us that it’s better to pat the lotion. Rubbing can cause unnecessary tugging of the skin and contribute to sagging or irritation. Be generous and spread it down to your neck and chest since these are the first ones to show aging.

Eye Cream

It may not be a common beauty essential for everyone, but as we grow older, chances are the first wrinkle you see on your face will be around the eye area. The skin under our eyes is prone to wrinkles, dark circles, and fine lines, because of exposure to the sun and dry conditions. It is important to consider that the skin around the eyes is also thinner, that’s why normal moisturizer won’t do. An eye cream can help nourish the skin and give it the extra moisture it needs.

The eye area is more sensitive than other parts of the face, it’s recommended to use the ring or 4th finger to gently tap product under the eyes.

Sunscreen

Never comprise using sunscreen. We may be indoors all day and away from direct exposure to the sun, but we still need to protect our skin from the blue light coming from the screens of our computers and phones. Overexposure to blue light can cause skin problems and accelerate aging.  We recommend applying only a quarter-size dollop for the full face and to use sunscreens with both UVA and blue light protection.
