See all the designers our cover star Kim Jones wore against the ethereal landscape of Arizona for #MakingMEGA May 2019.

A meeting of two fashion forces demands nothing less than absolute perfection. The ethereal beauty of Arizona’s swirling sandstone proved to be the perfect backdrop for the collaborative creation of MEGA and our May 2019 cover girl, Kim Jones.

We took inspiration from the otherworldly appeal of Arizona’s landscape and the creative direction of Kim Jones herself. MEGA Fashion Editor Jebby Fronda championed the best of both local and international fashion, juxtaposing feminine with masculine silhouettes. She then grounded the pieces in a decidedly neutral palette, yet surprising with unexpected details in the ensembles.

Tapping into designers here and abroad, we set out to create looks worthy of both the international style savant’s and the best fashion magazine’s discerning tastes.

Firstly, we looked into Australian designer Dion Lee for his seemingly effortless fusion of construction and sensual fluidity. Look #37 straight from his S/S ’19 runway proved to be cover-worthy, with Dion’s signature netting being front and center. Paired with slouchy trousers by Rod Malanao, it played with the sartorial theme of feminine and masculine silhouettes.

Louis Vuitton’s S/S 19, in spite of the collection’s futuristic virtual reality aesthetic, fit seamlessly into the cover looks. Looks #32 and #40 from the runway provided a stark contrast against the sandstones of Arizona—a welcome juxtaposition. It was only fitting, as Nicolas Ghesquière’s pieces evoked imagery of the future inhabitants terraforming alien lands.

Kim Jones brought her own Balenciaga coat, a pocketed version of their coveted hourglass F/W ’18 trench coat in houndstooth. The double-breasted coat is a fine example of structural tailoring seen throughout the Fall collection, the silhouette of which mirrored the swerving shapes of the sandstones.

Young Filipino designer Rod Malanao was tapped to create a custom two-piece ensemble for the cover shoot. Known for textures and an unapologetic distressed and almost raw aesthetic, Rod created structured pieces in hand-painted leather.
