Fashion has always represented something greater. Farther than the macro trends and individualistic styles— we can view it as an art form. A constant documentation of how fashion has evolved over time and how it has proved itself an instrument of representation.

National Artist for Design Salvacion Lim Higgins photographed in 1983, draping fabric on a dress form in front of a mirror. It is said she often worked this way.

As the fashion industry ascends to new heights in the Philippines, it is only fitting to remember the beginnings of the industry. Where pieces are now considered as works of art yet continues to influence the designs of today. To celebrate this, we can look at the life of Salvacion Lim Higgins lived as a designer and a visionary.

Pearl grey silk satin terno with mauve silk roses that features one single seam at the center back. Created for Edith Nakpil Rabat in 1956. Now in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Recently honored as the National Artist in the Design Category, there is no doubt that Salvacion Lim Higgins showcased Philippine fashion in a new form of artistry during her time. Her unique interpretations of the Filipiniana were translated through intricate techniques—  she saw the endless possibilities fashion has to offer.

“Observing her at work while I was growing up is what made me realize that Fashion is actually both an art and a craft. The art lies in the vision and the craft is in the application. The art is in the dream – the craft is in making it real.”

Mark Lewis Higgins, Director of Slim’s Fashion & Arts School

Her distinct artistic style is evident with her exquisite techniques. Drapings that are fluid and organic and silhouettes that perfectly outlined the figures— Salvacion Lim Higgins saw past the garment and viewed it as an elegant form of sculpture.

Now, people are given a rare opportunity to grace pass her magnificent creations. From September 5 to 14, four decades of Salvacion Lim Higgins’ creations are exhibited at the Upper Ground Level Atrium of SM Aura Premier.

It is truly a remarkable time for Philippine fashion as we celebrate its future and its humble beginnings.
