Masking skin imperfections is easier said than done, but mastering it is not impossible. In a MEGA exclusive, we chat with celebrity makeup artist Anton Patdu to know how to apply concealer like a true expert

Nothing works as hard as a good concealer. It only takes a few dabs to hide blemishes, hyperpigmentation, redness, and dark undereye circles. But let’s be honest—mastering the category is no easy feat. “One of the most common misconceptions about it is believing that you have to put a lot of product to conceal when, in fact, a little product goes a long way,” celebrity makeup artist Anton Patdu explains. “It will look more naturally covered with fewer products.”

On creating a concealer routine

It’s undeniable that a proper application routine can help deliver better results. As luck would have it, Anton Patdu revealed his best-kept beauty secret to applying concealer like a professional. “I only cover what is needed,” he begins. I usually start with a base—a tinted moisturizer or a very light foundation. Then, I proceed by concealing reddish or purplish areas of the skin.” He also noted that he uses the least amount of product possible with a duo fiber concealer brush. “I dab the product, let it dry, and add another layer of concealer if necessary.”

“The key to concealing is actually through setting,” he added. “No matter how expensive or high coverage the concealer is, if you don’t set it, it will melt under the sun.” Thankfully, the celebrity makeup artist shared the right way to set the product. “It depends on the finish you want to achieve,” he mentioned. “But normally, I use a lightweight loose powder and press the product on the skin using a damp sponge.”

On choosing the right product

A good concealer can do it all. More often than not, it should neutralize hyperpigmentation, blur blemishes, and brighten dark circles. Consistency also matters. The best formulas feature the right balance of creaminess and pigment—the kind that blends seamlessly into the skin without the issue of caking, creasing, or melting. And while concealers are not a one-size-fits-all product, it’s important to note that a reliable iteration never compromises the bare minimum.

On mastering spot-concealing

There are simply days that call to be foundation-free. Spot-concealing is the perfect technique to even out your complexion while allowing the skin to breathe. The key to perfecting the method? The right concealer formula. Medium-coverage concealers work best in blurring out blemishes and redness. Apart from that, it also delivers a natural-looking smooth finish.

Meanwhile, full-coverage formulas are ideal for spot-concealing, hiding hyperpigmentation, and camouflaging dark circles. Anton Patdu’s go-to choice? Issy & Co.’s Active Concealer and Estée Lauder’s Double Wear Stay-in-Place Flawless Wear Concealer. To start spot-concealing, gently tap the product onto the face and blend it with a concealer brush. Conclude the process by setting with a loose powder.
