It featured some truly impressive pieces, particularly the men’s ensembles that blended timeless style with contemporary flair. In this interview with MEGA Man, the designer shares his motivation and inspiration for crafting these stunning looks and shares his unique vision for the world of menswear.

Modern meets tradition
When asked about his vision for these looks, Avel shared that creating a regal look fit for a prince was the ultimate goal. The designer also added that he aimed to emanate a regal yet contemporary ambiance while integrating our cultural heritage. This was exemplified through the utilization of barong and a waistband belt crafted from indigenous textiles. He also employed various techniques, such as impressive layering and exquisite embroidery, which undoubtedly elevated the overall look.
Exquisite embroidery
One of the highlights of his collection was certainly the breathtaking embroidery that took center stage. The level of craftsmanship and attention to detail in the embroidery designs that embellished the barongs and jackets were absolutely stunning, capturing the attention of all who laid eyes on them. The designer also opened up about his desire to shift the focus from mere visual aesthetics to a deeper appreciation for the intricate art of Philippine embroidery and the talented individuals responsible for its creation. He expressed his concern about the gradual decline of appreciation for our culture, which he strongly opposes. As revealed in his recent interview with MEGA, the idea presented adds a layer of depth to the already impressive collection. Supporting local
Avel takes great pride in his latest collection, which features locally sourced products for both men’s and women’s looks, a testament to his commitment to supporting local industries and promoting sustainability in fashion. He added that he intentionally refrained from dictating the direction of the embroidery designs and fabrics used to provide a platform for Filipino weavers and embroiderers to unleash their creativity and showcase the raw beauty of Philippine culture. But with the addition of his meticulous attention to detail, every aspect of the collection shone through with utmost brilliance.
The designer’s vision
Avel expressed his desire for the menswear scene in the Philippines to explore creative avenues and novel approaches that seamlessly merge the allure of the past with the boldness of the present, just like what he did with his latest collection. He elevated traditional barongs and classic suit silhouettes, imbuing them with a fresh, edgy vibe that is both wearable and fashion-forward.
The fashion designer also revealed that he is in talks with the Department of Science and Technology to explore innovative methods and techniques for promoting our indigenous raw materials as fabrics. This initiative aims to make these resources more readily available to other designers, thereby enhancing their accessibility and utilization. As Avel pointed out, the fashion industry in the Philippines is set to become not only unique but sustainable, too.
