1. PIZZAZZ FROM THE MISFITS
The video opens with Kiana donning a look inspired by Pizzazz from The Misfits, the main antagonist of 80s animated TV Series Jem and the Holograms. She sports Pizzazz’s usual deep neckline mini dresses down to her signature green hair and ferocious eye make up.
2. MAJOR FROM GHOST IN THE SHELL
Major is the augmented-cybernetic human from the 1995 animated sci-fi film Ghost in the Shell. Her holographic thermoptic suit which gives her the ability to be invisible closely mimics this custom clear PVC bolero and corset designed by Yves Camingue. “The styling team showed me photos of lady trons/robots landing in the desert and the futurama craze of the 80s. So I perused muses of YSL, Dolce & Gabbana Collections in the mid-2000s that were inspired by BDSM and the 80s,” when asked about the inspiration behind his designs.
3. JEM FROM JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS
Of course, how else can we talk about 80s fashion references without mentioning the iconic Jem from Jem and the Holograms? It’s her vibrant hair, undeniable charisma and strong exaggerated shoulder-padded dresses that influenced the unforgettable era of dressing. “I referred to the Jetsons and the punkness of Jem & The Holograms, also spaceship design and just kind of launched from there, no pun intended!” he gushes.
4. JANE JONES FROM CLOSER
As the only film from the 2000s that made it onto the list, Jane Jones is an American romantic drama film starring Natalie Portman. Jane’s wardrobe is devoid of shimmer and Kiana wears a similar look in a black shiny bodysuit matched with towering platform heels.
5. LT. ELLIS FROM UFO
UFO is a 1970 British sci-fi TV series and Kiana successfully nails this avant-garde version of what a spacesuit looks like. The metallic pink leather jacket with exaggerated collar was also designed by Yves. When we asked him how it was like working with Kiana, here’s what he had to say. “I felt so honoured and stoked since I’m primarily a music fan and then a fashion fan. So designing for recording artists is like my run in the playground.”
