Young designer Mikayl Trinidad pays homage to his grandmother in Monohomme’s runway debut

For its inaugural runway show, Monohomme had quite the story to tell. Young designer Mikayl Trinidad initially eyed BYS Fashion Week 2024 as a springboard to elevate his brand—a bold introduction of his designer identity. But as the collection took shape, it evolved into something more significant: a sartorial homage to his grandmother. Each garment wove the threads of her personality and tastes, stitching in elements that evoked memories of the matriarch into one collection.

First runway show, first major showcase, and first dive into womenswear—Monohomme’s runway debut was all about breaking new ground. But for designer Mikayl Trinidad, it was deeply personal. “What inspired me to do this is my grandmom,” the designer shared with MEGA. “There are certain pieces from the collection that really describe everything she likes and doesn’t—things that remind me of her.”

Boundaries, for him, may exist in trends and style preferences, but never in the use of fabrics. “I’ve been working with denim, twill, and lace textiles for almost three years,” he expressed. “I think what I want people to see is that we can always play with fabrics and make it work together. There’s no such thing as boundaries when it comes to playing with fabrics—as long as it’s wearable.”

As a self-taught designer manning everything solo, he faced the pressure that comes with limited resources and big ambitions. “I thought I could only make three to six looks every year,” the designer admits. But landing a spot at this year’s BYS Fashion Week with fellow young designers Kristine Ordinario and Iñigo Villegas nudged him beyond his limits. Being a one-man team can feel like navigating labyrinth of fabrics and sketches, but Mikayl made it work.

While it played with new ideas, the collection remained true to form: deconstructed shapes, lace, textures, and three-dimensional embellishments—everything that defines the brand. It wasn’t a drastic shift from its signature style, but was certainly more special. Not because of the flashy, ornate details but rather the quiet stories woven into each piece, with every thread like a little keepsake crafted from more than just fabric.
