Carlos Yulo is now an Olympic champion, giving the Philippines its first gold medal at the Paris Olympics 2024
History-making Filipino athlete Carlos Yulo claimed the gold medal in the men’s floor exercise final at the Paris Olympics Saturday night (Manila time). With a near-perfect routine of 15.000 (8.400 for execution and 6.600 for difficulty), the 24-year-old gymnastics star clinched the first Olympic medal for the Philippines in the 2024 Paris Olympics; he is also the second Olympic champion in the country’s history following weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, who took home the gold in the 2021 edition of the games in Tokyo.

Carlos Yulo is now the Philippines’ Golden Boy. In his decorated career, he finally brought home an elusive medal for gymnastics for his outstanding performance on the floor, defeating defending champion Artem Dolgopyat of Israel.
While his spot in the history books is sealed, Carlos Yulo isn’t done. His next competition is slated on Sunday, as he competes for a possible second gold medal under the men’s artistic gymnastics vault final. If Yulo secures his second gold medal, he will be the first Filipino athlete in history to win twice at the Olympics.
