Cartier Reinvents the Classic Trinity Collection For Its 100th Year

Weaving bonds of love into everyday life, Cartier celebrates 100 years of the Trinity collection through simple, pure, and daring designs

In 1924, Louis Cartier designed Trinity, three intertwined rings, as an exquisite representation of Cartier’s most cherished values—diversity, love in its multifaceted forms, and harmonious unity. A century after its magnificent inception, its charm continues to hold strong as it thrives and inspires love in all forms: filial, familial, friendly, marital, and more.

This year, Cartier celebrates the 100th anniversary of the iconic Trinity, which embodies sentiments of the heart demonstrated through three rings in yellow gold, rose gold, and white gold that come together to play as a trio.

A contemporary icon

The story of Trinity is deeply entwined with the history of Cartier itself, where its design served as a tribute to the three Cartier brothers, Louis, Pierre, and Jacques, and their historic Cartier flagship boutiques in Paris, London, and New York. This love affair with the number three turned Trinity into the Maison’s first design icon, signifying an era of modernity.

In its centennial celebration, Trinity is reinvented once more, starting with the reimagined maximalist version of the XL bracelet from the 2000s. Cartier has increased the volume of the three bands in this XL version while also introducing the XL version of the iconic ring, which underlines Trinity’s timeless modernity.

Apart from the reissuance of the bracelet and new ring sizes, the Trinity range also possesses unique features that captivated many with its alluring details.

“The idea of redesigning Cartier Trinity, an icon ‘par excellence,’ seemed almost laughable, an impossible feat. But the challenge intrigued us,” Marie-Laure Cérède, Director of Watchmaking and Jewellery design, shared. “We aimed to capture the absolute essence of the original, but with a unique and incremental creative recipe.”

The new design retains the chromatic trilogy along with its mobility and clean lines, but explores a geometric approach and distortion of the bands. In featuring creativity and adaptability, the cushion-shaped version allows rings to slide one above the other with the same naturalness as the round version. This collection comprises classic and large model rings, all in gold, or paved with diamonds, a bracelet, and a pendant.

When asked how the cushion-shaped version came to be, Cérède said, “Instead of starting from a hand-drawn sketch, we worked the volume by hand—kneading the material, rolling it, compressing it to isolate a creative direction. To our surprise, an unexpected new shape began to emerge: a cushion.”

Meanwhile, the modular Trinity exemplifies versatility in creating multiple ways to wear the same ring. Depending on the wearer’s wishes, it can be worn as one wide, large band, or as three. Interlocking, the three bands unfold like a construction game, revealing their diamonds as they move.

Transcending time, Trinity remains one of Cartier’s most iconic designs. This grand and momentous occasion is a testimony to its timeless elegance, creative innovation, and collective love.
