Madame Tussauds Singapore has finally unveiled Catriona Gray’s wax figure. Read about her first impression and her plans of taking her future children to visit the museum.

Catriona Gray is used to having her photos taken and her looks re-created by thousands of people. Despite this, the iconic queen couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed when meeting face-to-face with her life-size wax figure created by the artists at Madame Tussauds. Getting a call from the famous museum isn’t something easy to achieve. People are chosen based on their global influence that tourists from all over the world will be willing to pay, see and pose with a replica. With this said the country’s iconic queen perfectly fits the bill. According to Madame Tussauds Singapore General Manager Eric Mak, fans picked the Miss Universe 2018 winner as their top pick for the next personality they want to see in Singapore.

In our one-one-interview, she tells me that she first got the call while she was in New York in 2019. “It was a shock because I had this perception that the people that got featured at Madame Tussauds were the top of the top of the list like historical, impactful leaders of history. So, for me to get my own wax figure was a ‘pinch me’ moment,” she shares. Her wax figure was originally planned to be launched last year, but due to the pandemic, it had to be postponed. Nevertheless, with the world opening up, Catriona was able to fly to Singapore to meet her “twin”.

“It’s really exciting that it’s finally launching now and at a time that I can be here, not just online.” She then reveals that the first time she was able to meet her was right before our interview. “I’ve seen pictures, but it was only for reviewing and if I had any comments. The Madame Tussauds team is very particular with details and measurements, and I appreciated that they kept seeking my feedback. So, I’ve only really seen her in photos. I was so nervous. I didn’t know why but when I finally saw her it was a weird but crazy feeling. I’m so honored and flattered to even have this and have people come and visit her to do the lava walk.” A 90-second instructional video will also be played right behind her wax figure so visitors can learn the best tips from Catriona herself on how to do the walk that won her the crown. “Hopefully, they could have a deeper appreciation for what we beauty queens do on stage where it’s not only about walking from A to B but there’s a craft to it that’s trained for,” she explains further.

Dressed in her Mayon Volcano-inspired fiery lava gown by Filipino designer Mak Tumang, complete with the three stars and the sun earring cuff and red lip, what’s most important for the beauty queen is that the Catriona Gray wax figure is also a symbol of Filipino talent. “I would’ve never reached the title of Miss Universe without the team behind me. I can’t wait for people to get up close and appreciate the detail and intricacy that went into creating the dress because it really is so reminiscent of the real lava gown,” she says. “I’m excited to see our Filipino kababayans to see her but I would love people from other places of the world to appreciate the craftmanship on not only the gown but also the accessories. Hopefully, they’ll dig a little bit deeper to what I represented in my Miss Universe journey and how I carry the Philippines in all aspects. That’s something that brings me so much pride.”

Making history as the first Miss Universe and Filipina to appear at Madame Tussauds Singapore (Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach’s wax figure is stationed in Hong Kong), what the queen looks forward to most is being able to bring her future children and inspire young girls in the years to come. “Hopefully I get to bring my kid to see her one day, I would love my parents to also see her. I remember walking around Madame Tussauds at the age of thirteen and looking up to the people I idolize so it’s exciting that may be a young girl will be walking through these same halls thinking the same thing.”
