Celebrity hairstylist Mark Anthony Rosales dishes out his expert guide to finding the best haircut this summer season
The new season calls for a new chop, making now the perfect time to wade through haircut ideas in search of a new look. “The key to finding the best haircut is knowing your face shape,” says celebrity hairstylist Mark Anthony Rosales. “Face yourself in the mirror, wear a headband, or pull back your hair then follow the hairline—in that way you are able to determine your face shape. Clear communication with your hairstylist is also important.”

The general mood? A play on layered hair. “Soft layers are perfect for fine hair. It helps to lose some length and weight, and create dimension in your hair, while butterfly layers create the right amount of volume,” the hair expert says as he dished out the most-requested haircuts this summer. “Apart from that, shaggy lob—a sexy hairstyle is a popular choice because it gives lots of texture, movement, and volume while pixie remains a timeless staple cut for summer. It never goes out of style.”
For round faces
The celebrity hairstylist recommends a transformative side-swept bob for round faces who are craving for a big chop. “The style looks almost asymmetrical,” he notes. “It’s a great way to take the focus away from the roundness of the face shape.” Meanwhile, a layered hair with curtain bangs makes the perfect choice for anyone who wants to keep their hair length. “The face-framing layers break up a round face for the illusion of a slimmer silhouette,” he added.
For oval faces
“If you have an oval face shape, consider yourself lucky!” the celebrity hairstylist expressed. “It simply looks good with just about any style.” However, it appears that many fans are still in favor of low-maintenance cuts like long layers. “Sweeping layers are popular because it’s easy to style and it frames the face perfectly,” he detailed. “Elsewhere, fringe also works great with oval face shapes, particularly if you have a larger forehead.”
For heart faces
Heart-shaped faces are often characterized by having a larger, wider forehead with the face getting more angled towards the chin. Looking for a dramatic hair transformation? Opt for a side-swept long pixie. “Sweeping layers help balance out the heart-shaped face,” he explained. “Layered lobs are also perfect! A middle-parted and straightened hair style skims the widest part of a heart-shaped face, helping narrow the overall shape.”
For diamond faces
Considered as one of the rarest face shapes, diamond is typically described with a narrow forehead, wide cheekbones, and a narrow chin. “A short crop cut will open up your face and highlight your cheekbones,” the celebrity hairstylist weighs in. “Meanwhile, a shoulder-length haircut can accentuate the cheekbones while balancing out a narrow forehead.”
Take it from the pro
Besides haircut, it’s also important to put attention into haircare. “Summer doesn’t have to be the season of bad hair days,” he said. “Start from basic hydrate, get a trim to get rid of your split ends. Switch to a deep nourishing treatment like hair botox—this treatment is the best defense against frizz.”
