As we all know it, retaining a fresh base makeup is easier said than done. Here, artists Bryan Cuizon and Japeth Purog exclusively shared an expert tip on how to achieve the coveted complexion that can last throughout the day
It’s clear that skin-focused makeup fronted this year’s beauty moodboard. In fact, a fresh and radiant base format is synonymous with stars like Anne Curtis, Kathryn Bernardo, Bea Alonzo, and Coleen Garcia. “Skin-focused makeup is centralized on enhancing one’s complexion,” celebrity makeup artist Japeth Purog pointed out how the look helped fans embrace their real beauty. He added, “Personally, I am a fan of this look since it’s more breathable and natural-looking.”
Meanwhile, fellow celebrity makeup artist Bryan Cuizon emphasized its importance to any beauty routine. “It is essential since this will be the first process to be done.” He shared, “Failing to achieve it will give you powerless makeup.” A good skin-focused base format sets as the canvas of any look. Here, both artists shared exactly how one can master the art of base makeup, and a beauty insider on how to make it long-lasting.

Focus on the skin
As mentioned, skin-focused base makeup prioritizes enhancing one’s complexion than perfecting it. It’s also a good practice to embrace the beauty of our natural skin texture. “The truth is, skin has textures and you don’t need to hide them by putting too many products,” Japeth Purog reminded fans. “Know the best product that suits your skin. Enhance your skin by taking care of it, and not by covering or hiding behind too many layers of makeup.”
Bryan Cuizon also advised fans to pay attention to their skin. “A good makeup base should address first the concern of skin,” he cited, while Japeth Purog added, “Skincare as the base of your makeup should be a process that is enjoyable to you because you are actually pampering yourself.”
Prep the skin properly
“The standard for a perfect makeup base for me is always doing the proper skin prep,” Japeth Purog shared. The artist unveiled that cleansing, toning, and moisturizing are the non-negotiable pillars of this process. “All of these step-by-step skincare rituals will help your skin prep itself for all of the makeup products that you will be applying on top of the base.”
Meanwhile, Bryan Cuizon shared an exclusive expert tip that fans can easily incorporate to their routine: “Rubbing ice before makeup gives you natural flawless makeup and adds glow to your skin.”
Know what works for your skin
While the beauty market is never short of exciting products to try, formulas that suit your skin type should always be the priority. Take Bryan Cuizon as an example. The artist emphasized the importance of skin assessment in identifying what works best for his clients. “I often use tinted moisturizer foundations for dry skin, and matte foundation for oily [skin]. That is why skin assessment is important.” Japeth Purog agreed by saying, “Each skin is unique. It is best to consult with a derma to know what product is safe for your own skin.” For beginners, he recommended starting with products or formulas that are very light on the skin, fragrance-free, and will not irritate and burn the skin.
Incorporate these techniques
Aside from the right formulations, a good makeup technique is a foolproof way to achieve a second-skin-like finish. “I prefer to use my fingers whenever I start putting on skin care. Using ice rollers is also one technique to improve blood flow,” Bryan Cuizon shared. Japeth Purog also considers the hands as the most convenient and efficient tool to use. “The right facial massage can contribute to a good flow and circulation of blood around your face.” He added, “A regular upward motions massage when applying your skincare is always a good technique to defy the gravity of the skin.”
The expert tip
Retaining the fresh look is easier said than done. Luckily, the experts shared exactly how one can keep the radiance throughout the entire day. “For a long-lasting effect, do not skip the makeup base process,” Japeth Purog emphasized. “Use the exact amount that your skin needs. Lastly, use a good setting spray that seals and helps the makeup stay longer. And my piece of advice for a less hulas look is: less product, less hulas.”
Unsurprisingly, it’s also a statement that resonates well with Bryan Cuizon. “Less is more. In this era, [it’s the] no-makeup makeup look. Since our country is quite humid, it’s better to apply minimal foundation and use the correct type of primers. [And] fixing spray is highly recommended.”
