Brand after brand, the world of luxury fashion has been changing things up for the better. Just before the brand’s Metiers d’Art show at the Met, Chanel has announced that they too are going fur-free and banning all exotic skins for their future collections. While other brands still use exotic animal skin on their products, Chanel decided to completely stop the practice. This means no more crocodile, lizard, shark, stingray, and snake skins on any of their products.
It all boils down to the company being unable to “source exotic skins [that] match [the brand’s] ethical standards.” Karl Lagerfeld made sure that this will not affect the brand negatively. He says that fur and exotic skins can’t be found on past collections, therefore isn’t a part of the brand’s DNA. “This is a decision which provides an opportunity to create a new generation of high-end products that respect our fundamentals: the exceptional creativity of our Creative Studio, our expertise, our standards of excellence, noble and innovative materials and exceptional finish,” Chanel adds in a statement.
2018 seems to be the year of change for luxury fashion. With 2019 coming real soon, it’s safe to say that we’re looking at more ethical brands to continue their legacies in the industry.
