At the Miss Universe 2024 preliminaries, the Philippines’ bet stunned in a cerulean blue gown designed by Filipino designer Manny Halasan
Grace, fluidity, and regality—Chelsea Manalo’s evening gown at the 73rd Miss Universe preliminaries was a quiet standout. Inspired by the calming waves of the sea, her cerulean blue gown skipped the usual drama of sequins and beads. Instead, Filipino designer Manny Halasan relied on volume, clean lines, and the confidence of the queen wearing it. Chelsea—with her head held high—let simplicity do the talking, and it spoke volumes.
Manny Halasan, who also designed her “Hiraya” national costume, envisioned the gown as a dream brought to life. “This simple gown wanted to show that a little girl’s dreams can definitely come true,” the designer penned on Instagram. “She is graceful, she is calm, and she is enjoying every minute of it.” The design was all about movement, too—the way the fabric swirled and flowed, almost like it was alive with the ocean’s rhythm.
On the surface, it seemed deceptively simple—no beads or embellishments, just beautifully flowing fabric. But beneath its understated design, the evening gown perfectly captured the grace and strength Chelsea brought to the stage. In a segment often dominated by thigh-high slits and blinding embellishments, this was a bold design for the beauty queen. It was a “less is more” moment, making Chelsea standout like a rare black pearl of the orient seas.
Fans were also quick to celebrate the understated masterpiece. There was much appreciation of the gown’s regal cut, the striking choice of color, its meaning, and of course, the way it was worn.
Now that the preliminaries are over and the Finals Competition approaches, the excitement is palpable. Her look alone told a story that didn’t need to be walked—just projected. Chelsea Manalo has put on a show, wowing the crowd with her national costume, swimsuit walk, and her evening gown, and all that’s left to do is to anticipate what she brings next.
