Filipina designer Chynna Mamawal showcased her Fall/Winter collection in Vancouver Fashion Week
Having Filipino designers present their works in the global fashion scene is definitely a step closer to gaining international recognition. Designers like Avel Bacudio, Chris Nick, and Francis Libiran had their Spring/Summer collections presented just last year during LA Fashion Week, while esteemed Filipino designer Furne One would actively participate in Dubai Fashion Week.
And just last April 14, another designer joined the roster of international shows as she presented her 12-piece collection at Vancouver Fashion Week. A concept filled with all things elegant and whimsical done by a team of Filipinos, Chynna Mamawal’s collection transcends the style as she represents the country through her designs.
The young Filipina designer has quite the reputation in the local fashion scene with her background in leading several shopping malls in the Philippines, as well as styling campaigns for both women and teens. To add to that, she also handled a handful of celebrities and personalities who have worn some of her pieces. And if you’ve seen her designs, you’d recognize her signature style of femininity translated in a delicate or sensual manner.
“I would like to showcase Filipino fashion and art in the global scene. It’s proudly Filipino.”
Chynna Mamawal
This is very much evident in her 12-piece Fall/Winter collection finished with such intricacy. For Chynna, the concept behind the collection speaks more than the whimsical as it’s also an opportunity to showcase the talent of the Filipinos. It became a celebration of Philippine fashion, a fitting message as Vancouver Fashion Week is known for its global exposure for emerging designers.
Taking a closer look at the collection, we can say that it became a reflection of the impressive background she has. Most designs featured meticulous beadwork, sleek tailoring, and billowed out silhouettes—perfectly showcasing the versatility of Chynna Mamawal.
The collection started with a lineup of pieces in black and white. Black gowns were done with such simplicity, but were elevated with unique beadwork reminiscent of twinkling stars and water flowing under the night sky. It captured the elegance of the classic black as Chynna embraced signature silhouettes such as the mermaid gown and A-line skirt.
However, it took a turn as the white pieces came into appearance. It was done with such modernity with a hint of daintiness as seen on the tea-length dress and petal-like appliques on the straps down to the hem. This black and white lineup created a balance of the contemporary and the timeless touch to the collection.
The collection neared its end when vibrancy suddenly walked down the runway. Pops of the favored shade of last year, Viva Magenta, was used in an exaggerated manner. Billowed out skirts were finished in tulle and tiered skirts accentuated the bodice of the gown—creating a dreamlike and playful aura to the whole collection.
