Custom Wellness is the Future of Medicine—But What is it?

Living a long, perfectly healthy life seems like an insurmountable task these days, with mental and physical illnesses threatening to overtake our new normal. And in part due to TV commercials and standard doctor’s prescriptions, we react to symptoms of illness with generic medications. However, according to JLopezMD Medispa and Wellness Center Head Doctor Joel Lopez, taking charge of your health by treating the underlying causes of symptoms is better in the long term. This is where custom wellness comes in.

Dr. Joel describes custom wellness as treatments personalized or tailored to your body, history, and needs. Here, he takes Integrative Medicine further by using it for preventative purposes, as he likens the practice of treating symptoms alone to band-aid solutions. While most book an appointment at his clinic for the Ageless Programs, Dr. Joel assures that their treatments for Chronic Degenerative Diseases and age-related disorders are applicable to all ages as their holistic approach to health is all about boosting and maintaining overall wellness.

How does custom wellness work?

First, a consultation. For an hour, your physician will discuss details like your birth, social, and occupational history. Then, they’ll perform initial diagnostic tests to check for nutritional deficiencies. “We also check for heavy metal toxicities because we’re exposed to a lot of toxins every day—some we get from the air we breathe, the food that we eat, or even personal care products like in makeup for women,” Dr. Joel says. The testing phase will take a couple of days up to a week, depending on what the physician is looking for.

After that, they will perform a follow-up consultation to discuss the results and put you on a program. Talking about their services, Dr. Joel says, “We have this ageless men and women program which actually involves hormone replacement therapy. If they need intravenous nutritional therapy, we may recommend that as well, especially [for] those with nutritional deficiencies because it’s faster to correct deficiencies through the IV.”

Custom wellness can also benefit athletes looking to improve their health. “We have other services like hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which has to be done in a series of treatments too, and that, we find out, is really good for neurological problems like sports injuries. So a lot of athletes avail of that because it helps heal their sports injuries and they won’t have to take medications long-term, which could cause side effects eventually,” Dr. Joel adds.

Dr. Joel also gave an example of a patient whose life drastically changed thanks to custom wellness. He shares that an elderly gentleman came to them because, for six months, he wasn’t able to play tennis like he used to. So, they put him through initial testing, then put him on a program to correct hormone imbalances and improve his muscle strength. They also repaired old sports injuries using the hyperbaric chamber and further strengthened him overall using IV therapies. In about a month, he got better.

Their IV therapies also tackle mental wellness. Dr. Joel shares that the most effective one they’ve used for memory problems is IV NAD. “NAD stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. It’s a metabolaid of Vitamin B3, so it helps improve circulation to the brain. When the circulation there is better, it helps improve the neurotransmitter levels as well, some of which are really important for memory,” he explains. IV NAD is also used to treat addiction and is good for detoxification, anti-aging, and improving circulation.

On the other hand, if your goal is to lose or manage your weight the right way, they have a program for that too. If you choose this option, your physician will check for underlying causes of weight gain and perform a baseline body composition analysis to see if the weight you’re losing is from fat or muscle.

With that said, Dr. Joel emphasizes the need to take charge of your health. “People don’t realize that they save a lot of money only to use it during the last few years of their life, spending on treatments for chronic disease or a terminal illness. It’s better to invest that money in your health while you’re still young,” he says.

JLopezMD offers five services: Ageless Man Program, Ageless Woman Program, Optimized Mind and Body, Stretch Mark Camouflage, and Bespoke IV and Oral Nutrition. They also have a product line called JLo Organics’ Vitale Line, which consists of nutritional supplements.
