Award-winning actor Darren Criss has officially tied the knot with Mia Swier on February 16 in New Orleans. During the four-day wedding celebration, the Francis Libiran Barong Tagalog that he wore to his wedding was a definite eyecatcher.

The American Crime Story: Assassination of Gianni Versace and former Glee star Darren Criss is no stranger to donning a dapper look as he has always been listed as one of the best-dressed men on the red carpet. So when his big day came, the first thing that came to our minds was how will he take men’s sartorial game to the next level?

For their wedding day, the couple wanted to put their own twist to classic traditions and this is exactly what they did when it comes to their modish choices as well. “The whole goal of our wedding was to take traditions and turn them on their heads with our own flair,” Darren says in his interview with Vogue.

Mia wore a Vera Wang wedding dress with a vintage-inspired bodice and exposed garters over a bed of distressed tulle. As for Darren, he wore a custom off-white one-button shawl collar tuxedo by Giorgio Armani.

But as they proceeded to the reception, the newlyweds changed their looks. While Mia kept things sophisticatedly simple in a white short dress featuring a golden feather print, Darren paid homage to his own roots and honored his mother.

According to Francis Libiran in an interview with MEGA, “Darren has always been proud of his Filipino roots. I’m sure he wanted to pay homage by wearing the Barong on his very special day. Weddings are very sacred to Filipinos and it evokes our rich culture, too.”

So as the dashing groom serenaded everyone and danced with his Cebuana mother, Cerina, you’ll notice that his Barong Tagalog is accented with Francis Libiran’s signature Art Deco embroidery. Francis explained that “the design of the embroidery is inspired by the famous Tattoo design patterns of the Pintados.”

How did this come about? It’s all thanks to Darren’s stylist, Ashley Weston, for contacting Francis’ business partner Arsi Baltazar. “My business partner Arsi Baltazar received a message from [Darren’s stylist] asking if we can create our version of the Barong Tagalog for Darren’s wedding.”

Francis told MEGA that his whole team was ecstatic upon hearing it considering that Francis had just met and partied with him at the Golden Globes after-parties last January.

Francis shared that on February 5, the day of the fitting, “[Darren] loved the two Barongs but could not decide which one he was going to wear. So he said he would choose on his wedding day.” Regardless of which barong Darren chose to wear on his wedding, he would still make the perfect choice of wearing one as an ode to his Filipino roots.
