David Koma has his roses in full bloom as he puts femininity in motion at London Fashion Week with his Spring/Summer 2024 collection
The Spring/Summer 2024 collection of David Koma emerges as a beguiling synthesis of regal elegance and a dash of rebellious racing fervor. Known for his imaginative and expressive creations, the designer embarked on a creative journey that seamlessly blended the world of racing attire with the soft allure of romance, all thanks to a certain muse: Elizabeth II.

The collection’s muse emerged as the driving force behind Koma’s artistic vision. Intrigued by her passion for motorbikes and her enduring elegance, he sought to create a striking juxtaposition. The result was a collection that showcased the duality of her character—the confident biker and the lover of vibrant English roses.
Drawing inspiration from Queen Elizabeth’s iconic looks, the collection embraced a palette of vivid colors. Acidic greens, oranges, and lilacs including a dash of hot pink blur past the runway, echoing the antithesis of the Queen’s signature style. These colors served as the backdrop for Koma’s creative sphere.
At the heart of the collection was the celebration of the English rose. The rose, a symbol of peace since the Tudor era, took center stage in various forms. Solid color blocking with magnified encrusted brooches and three-dimensional garments paid homage to the late Queen’s belief that one must be seen to be believed. Biker twinsets were embellished with crystalized rosettes, and thigh-high boots with biker padding were inspired by Marianne Faithfull’s portrayal in the 1968 film, The Girl on a Motorcycle, another inspiration to the collection.
The collection embodied versatile femininity, with ruffles mimicking blooming roses and falling petals creating a palpable sense of grace. Subverted hand-drawn rose variations served as a testament to the multifaceted nature of Koma’s muse. The garments, worn with bright heels, exuded a regal refinement that intertwined seamlessly with modernity.
The designer’s artistry extends to textures and modern glamour—sheer tulle fabrics juxtaposed with satin transport us to an idyllic dreamscape. Bomber jackets with vibrant floral prints and ruffled asymmetric hems stimulate the senses, giving depth and complexity to the collection.
For the first time, David Koma introduced a handbag range to his repertoire. In a nod to the Queen’s preferred bag choices, the collection featured vivid metallic colors and four distinctive shapes. These bags re-appropriated the classic flap structure and proudly displayed large metal DK logos, making them a statement piece for the modern woman.
David Koma’s SS24 collection initiates an enthralling discourse. It skillfully weaves together the evolving persona of the contemporary woman with the enduring opulence linked to one of the globe’s most legendary monarchs, presenting a contemporary dialogue.
The collection was a modern story where the elegance of a young queen met the edginess of a biker, a royal rebel. With a vibrant palette, intricate details, and a nod to racing heritage, Koma painted a picture of versatile femininity in motion. It reminds us that fashion, like history, is in essence both tradition and innovation, forever evolving and forever enthralling.
