Before we even see their stunning gowns, the Miss Universe Philippines candidates have already wowed us with their eye-catching national costumes. Pristinely detailed, beautifully embellished, and thoughtfully designed, each candidate’s ensemble represent a part in Philippine culture that they have transformed into a wearable piece. With all this considered, we can’t help but be in awe of the creative minds behind such ensembles.

Here are some of the designers who worked on your favorite candidate’s national costume:

Louis Pangilinan

Pangasinan representative Maureen Wroblewitz was shining in her national costume, thanks to her designer Louis Pangilinan. While the designer has had his fair share of working with beauty queens like Miss Universe Philippines 2020 Rabiya Mateo and Miss International Philippines 2021 Hannah Arnold, he brought all the glitz for Maureen Wroblewitz’s costume. Inspired by Pangasinan’s national treasure, Bangus, the silver ensemble, which he called “Panag Asinan” is a work of art.

Oz Go

Oz Go really made a statement with Makati delegate Isabelle De Los Santos’ national costume. With Manila Carnival Queens in mind, he combined three major inspirations—barong tagalog, sampaguita, and pearls—to the national costume. The result? A beautifully detailed and embellished pink ensemble for Makati’s Isabelle De Los Santos.

Makayla Yamas

If we’re talking golden looks, then take a look at Cebu Province representative Steffi Aberasturi’s national costume designed by Malayka Yamas. Called “Weaver of Hope,” the national costume was inspired by Rattan weaving, which is considered a traditional Cebuano livelihood. Donning the colors red and gold, the ensemble also aims to honor religious relic Senyor Sto Niño.

Axel Que

For Axel Que, its all about epic folklore stories and mystical creatures for the national costume—and he gave Cebu City’s Beatrice Luigi Gomez just that. Inspired by the tale of Bakunawa, also known as the Moon Eater, the blue-green-purple ensemble is stunningly detailed and featured fin-like ruffles. Completed by a golden headpiece, Axel Que’s creation is a mythical creation come to life.

Joji Aguilar

Inspired by the legend of her city, Corrine Abalos’ national costume designed by Joji Aguilar is all about honoring Manda and Luyong. The yellow frock was designed by golden details—a wide gold collar and a corset-like belt around the waist—and completed by embellished headpiece, earrings, necklace, and fan.

Polly Lagyap

Masbate’s bet Kisses Delavin was a vision in her national costume designed by Polly Lagyap. The ensemble was inspired by the great-billed Heron, or known as Lapay in Masbate, is the province’s most symbolic bird. Featuring ostrich feathers, laser-cut details, the all white costume is pulled together by a headpiece that is a symbolic representation of Lapay, and two fans that represents wings.
