Perhaps we are still reeling from the opulence, indulgence and frivolity of the fashion of the film, Bohemian Rhapsody, which displayed the style choices of Freddie Mercury and the boys from Queen without an inch of apology. Apart from the life-stirring and head-banging music, Rami Malek’s stellar and jaw-dropping performance as both an enigmatic and larger-than-life Mercury, their clothes and costumes were a clear highlight, too. Outlandish and ostentatious, as it was definitive of the glam rock era, the fashionable excess was a spectacle. Sequins? Pile them on. A lizard-like jacket? Yes, please. And how about a mix of textures such as studs, leather and velvet? Oh, there was a lot to consume visually.

More than a very particular and not-for-the-faint-of-heart point-of-view, a very important lesson to learn from the legendary band and the film can be traced to an age-old Latin proverb: Fortune favors the bold. In the guise of standing out, everyone these days really do just look alike. Let’s be honest here, the rest of the social media and pop culture consumed populace is so hung up on getting in on the current, the viral, and the trendy that it essentially settles to just wanting to fit in.

With a world of options, barriers being broken and tired traditions being challenged, what good is looking like another Instagram #OOTD? Sure, pushing the boundaries is easier said than done, you will argue. This is where we come in.

In this exclusive, featuring the yet-to-be-dropped Moschino and H&M collab, we school you on a few easy-to-follow ways to dress in excess without looking like you got conked in the head.

Sequins and metallics are a very tricky thing to pull off, even for the most fashionably adventurous. While it isn’t going to be your everyday go-to piece, it is an eye-catching statement you can reach for when the moment calls for it—the holidays are creeping up fast after all. If piling it on isn’t necessarily your thing, it is best to keep everything else simple and understated, we suggest a fail-safe black. This way, not only is balance achieved, but you put all the focus on the blinged out piece.

There is a lot of black to choose from in the Moschino x H&M collection as envisioned by Jeremy Scott. However, since this is an offshoot of the playful designer’s very vivid imagination, then the normal black will be decorated to some degree. Think athleisure silhouettes and leather staples with 3D details in gold. This is a lesson in style in itself: puncture an all-black look with specks of gold to take to that more luxurious plane.

Not everything in the collection screams blatant excess, of course. With every style persona considered, accounted for and dutifully included, there is plenty to choose from. Drawing on a veritable coming-of-age timeline, from Disney-loving young’un to a more sexual (read: consenting) adult, you can live out your mood with anything from in-your-face prints to sweaters and pullovers decked with animated characters.

The Moschino x H&M collab drops globally, in select stores and online on November 8, 2018.
