“I feel old,” Erik admitted as we kicked off our chat about his time in the music scene. He went on to say that joining Star in a Million feels like it happened in the blink of an eye.

Reflecting on his career, the singer shared his pride in achieving this remarkable accomplishment. He noted how the industry often sees artists come and go, making his longevity even more special. He emphasized that his journey wouldn’t have been possible without the constant support of significant figures in his life—God, his parents, and his loyal fans.

His greatest refrain

With a lengthy list of achievements, including record-breaking hits and multiple awards and nominations, we asked the singer about his favorite. Instead, he pointed to being his parents’ son as his greatest source of pride.

From the time he embarked on his music journey, the crooner wholeheartedly embraced the role of being the family’s breadwinner, a decision he wouldn’t change for anything. Erik explained that his lifelong goal has always been to shower his parents with love and care, even though they never asked for it, because they are the most important people in his world—something he knows he has lived up to until the last moment.

Melodies of courage

The once-bright day suddenly shifted to pouring rain, almost as if the heavens were eavesdropping on our conversation. Erik remembered the painful moments of his mother’s passing on November 25th last year and his father’s on August 10th this year—experiences that continue to sadden him today.

Itong pain na ‘to pa rin ‘yung pinaghuhugutan ko. If you will ask me why I still continue, ito rin kasi ‘yung gusto nilang mangyari sa akin. Sila yung kasama ko mangarap 20 years ago.”

He acknowledged the deep pain that washes over him when he longs for his parents, especially when he’s alone. Still, he affirmed his willingness to bear this pain forever if it meant preserving his connection to the treasured memories they once shared.

A son’s serenade

Erik opened up that he had the opportunity to play the song “Hanggang Sa Huli” for his mom before she passed away, and he dedicated it to her as a Mother’s Day gift. Although it was painful to witness his mother’s declining health at the time, he was deeply moved when he saw her humming along and showing her appreciation. When asked which line from the song meant the most to him, Erik singled out, “Kahit paulit-ulit, kahit anong pasakit, titiisin wag ka lang mawawala sa piling ko. Kahit na anong unos ay kakayanin para sayo mahal ko, hanggang sa huli.”

The artistry continues

With a new album on the horizon, the artist shared his excitement about featuring an all-original song lineup, primarily revolving around themes of inspiration. He placed special emphasis on the song “Sagot Sa Aking Dasal,” which he plans to perform on the concert day itself. Written by Yeng Constantino, Erik described it as the anthem of his current life, emphasizing that “the way I live my life now is an answered prayer.”

Inspiring through every season

When asked about his aspirations following his anniversary celebration, the artist gave an honest reply, saying, “I’m still in pain. I’m still grieving.” Erik shared that the experience of losing his parents has taught him to simply cherish each moment and take life one step at a time. He also expressed his hope to remain in the music industry for an extended period, continuing to inspire people with his songs, regardless of the season he may find himself in.
