In an exclusive interview with MEGA, Erwin Canlas shares his creative process, motivations, and vision for the art community

The 30-year-old photographer with a penchant for clean and experimental imagery is on the brink of an exciting artistic journey. As the founder of RiseSpace Art Gallery settled in Makati City, he’s about to open its doors to the art-loving public for the very first time, with an inaugural exhibit titled Visions, displayed from September 8 to 23. It’s as if he’s opened a window into his creative psyche, and we’re invited to take a peek.

The artist’s creative process is deeply influenced by photographers like Alasdair McLellan, Tim Walker, Willy Vanderpere, and Jamie Hawkesworth. He emphasizes the importance of studying their work, collecting references from books and magazines, and understanding their lighting and photography techniques. Quick and precise, he knows what he wants before the camera even clicks. Speed, it seems, is the wind beneath his creative wings, allowing him to soar into the unknown realms of experimentation. However, it’s not a one-person show. Collaboration is the secret sauce in Erwin’s photography stew, where the final image is a meal of talents.

Establishing RiseSpace Art Gallery has been a lifelong dream for the photographer, stemming from his artistic family background. His journey to create the gallery is a story of artistic roots and a dream to break the mold. With his father, artist Rene Canlas, Erwin grew up in a canvas-covered universe. “Our goal is to provide an art space for both emerging and established artists where they can realize their artistic visions.” Together, they’re on a quest to offer Filipino artists a canvas of their own—a place where artistic ambitions can unfurl, unhinged by norms. RiseSpace transcends the confines of genre, gender, and expectation, making it a haven for creators from the realms of traditional art, fashion, music, and dance.

A visionary display

Visions, the inaugural exhibit at RiseSpace Art Gallery, is poised to be more than just a collection of artworks; it’s also a portal into the creative cosmos of the Canlas family. This exhibition promises to be a mesmerizing expedition through three distinct artistic perspectives, each with its unique charm and perspective. Erwin, Rene, and Isabella Canlas offer a visual purpose that’s as varied as a rainbow after a summer storm. This is not your typical gallery experience, but an odyssey through the creative minds of a family that sees art as a shared language.

Erwin’s corner of the exhibition is a play of shadows and light, a dialect of precision. The photographs speak not just of subjects, but of the moments in between—the laughter, the tension, and the untold stories that only a keen eye can capture. Rene, the patriarch of the Canlas clan, brings a seasoned hand to the exhibit; his works are a journey through decades of artistic exploration. His art tells tales of experience, encouraging viewers to see the world through the eyes of a seasoned traveler who knows that every brush on the canvas carries the weight of his life’s moments. Isabella, the youngest member of the artistic triumvirate, introduces a whimsical breath of fresh air to Visions. Her choice of subjects and her fearless use of color are a testament to her unapologetic embrace of creativity. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the purest art comes from the most unfiltered hearts.

Beyond being a display of artistic integrity and individuality, the exhibit serves as a canvas of possibility for aspiring artists and gallery-goers alike. It’s a message that art knows no boundaries, no age, and no formula. It’s a manifestation of the belief that art is a living, breathing entity that can change, evolve, and inspire.

Empowering the art community

The photographer envisions RiseSpace Art Gallery as a hub for creative exchange. Besides providing a platform for showcasing art, the gallery aims to host talks, peer reviews, and even offer grants to emerging artists, helping them overcome barriers to exhibiting their work. “We want to be able to discover and nurture talent.”

Erwin and RiseSpace Art Gallery aspire to make art accessible and non-intimidating. They want visitors to leave the gallery feeling inspired, knowing that they can create, paint, and showcase and exhibit as well. After all, the power of art lies in its ability to inspire and empower individuals.

Personal favorites and balancing act

Among the artworks Erwin has encountered or created, Isabella’s work holds a special place in his heart. He admires her childlike approach, which brings a sense of purity and innocence to her art. “Her artwork is a reflection of herself. That’s what makes it special to me and I hope viewers can see that as well.” Balancing a career as a photographer and running an art gallery can be challenging, but Erwin emphasizes setting priorities and boundaries, as well as allocating time and energy wisely. Family and personal well-being always take precedence.

The artist’s advice

Erwin believes that art is a reflection of life, and life is reflected through art. It serves as a mirror to our world, documenting and preserving moments in time. “For me, it’s a way to record everything and for people to see what is and what will be recorded.” It’s a means of recording history, emotions, and experiences for future generations. “Art is a way to remember.”

Erwin’s advice to aspiring photographers and art enthusiasts is simple but profound: Be an artist first, and create. Passion and creativity are essential, but so is excellence and continuous improvement. Business success and recognition in the art world will follow naturally when you prioritize your artistic journey.
As Erwin Canlas prepares to unveil RiseSpace Art Gallery and the Visions exhibit, his passion for art, dedication to nurturing talent, and commitment to making art accessible shine brightly. He stands as an inspirational figure for the creative community, demonstrating that art is not only about the end result, but also the journey of artistic exploration and self-discovery.
