For Bianca Umali, the GMA Gala 2024 was a night of showcasing the sartorial craftsmanship of Filipino designers
At the GMA Gala 2024, Bianca Umali’s appearance echoed the event’s theme of gratitude. Hers, however, was an homage to the Filipino designers who have solidified her polished and playful style. “Bianca and I decided to do three looks for this year’s GMA Gala,” John Paul Dizon, the star’s stylist, shared in an exclusive interview with MEGA. “We’ve been working with these designers for the past years, and it’s like our way of thanking them for continuously dressing us up,” he elaborated further.

The Deconstructed Menswear
At the occasion, Bianca put Joey Samson’s garment surgery into the spotlight. For the look that made it to the red carpet, Samson transformed formal menswear into a deconstructed, feminine number. He refashioned the tuxedo shirt into a high-collared halter top with a bowtie detailing, as well as the double-breasted long coat that turned into a skirt with a dramatic train. “Joey Samson is a master tailor,” Dizon pointed out.
The Body of Work
For Bianca’s next look, she and Dizon wanted to veer from her solidly embellished gold number from the past year. Embracing her figure in sheer fashion, the Sang’gre star wore a black Joe San Antonio that complemented her natural curves. “We want people to see her in a different light, from the look last year,” John Paul said.
A Flock of Fabric Manipulation
Exhibiting his mastery on playing texture, Roel Rosal designed Bianca’s third and final look—a dress with a fitted bodice, shredded feathers, and wrapped pearls. “The second look was inspired from his previous Philippine Fashion week collections,” Dizon noted.
Bianca and John Paul’s collaborative vision translated into three designs that fit well into the other elements of the former’s whole look—her minaudière by Neil Felipp and jewelry from Twin Princess Gem, as well as the sleek glam courtesy of makeup artist Thazzia Falek and hairstylist MJ Rone.
Concluding the interview with his thoughts of giving Bianca her signature looks, the stylist mused, “Bianca and I have been working side by side for a decade now. So it’s simple: First, staying true to who she really is. Second, keeping our plans to ourselves to avoid being swayed by the opinions of others. Third, always being a fan of your client. Lastly, Bianca’s confidence is always top priority.”
