Meet Mauro–the model-turned-coach whose versatile and dynamic career proves that he can do it all
Since winning the Century Tuna Superbods in 2014, Mauro Lumba has discovered his true calling for fitness. Not only has he clinched a Muay Thai bronze medal at the 31st South East Asian (SEA) Games, but he also rocked part-time stints in acting and modeling. Now, as a full-time fitness coach, he instructs at CrossFit and boxing gyms while embracing his roles as a husband and father.
Mauro has recently been praised for being the force behind Kathryn Bernardo’s enviable physique, highlighting his reputation as a top-tier coach. In an exclusive with MEGA Active, he gives an in-depth look at his life as a dedicated fitness guru.

Beginning His Active Journey
Mauro’s active lifestyle began in childhood, thanks to his parents who introduced him to various sports and activities. His athletic path began with competitive basketball, a sport that, according to him, instilled in his system the mentality and discipline of an athlete. “I always wanted to get better, I wanted to get stronger and faster so that’s where I started my fitness journey,” he shares.
This early exposure established his passion for health and fitness, which transitioned to bodybuilding after college. Eventually, winning the Century Tuna Superbods title was pivotal in his growth. “Having won that made me realize that I really loved being fit and healthy. I never wanted to stop improving,” Lumba looks back.
Beyond bodybuilding, he has also explored Muay Thai and boxing while pursuing modeling and acting.
Working with Kathryn Bernardo
From one Superbod to another, Mauro was honored to coach celebrity Kathryn Bernardo for her endorsement. The coach shares with MEGA Active the exact training session he has laid out for the actress.
They usually start with a warm-up exercise—either running, biking, or rowing—followed by dynamic stretches. Next, there would be some strength exercises such as compound lifts; accessory work to focus on the smaller muscle groups, and conditioning through high-intensity workouts. Lastly, they would wrap up with a core exercise and cooldown stretches.
Ultimately, Mauro shares that Kathryn’s dedication to training made her success possible. “She worked really hard and prioritized her fitness even with a busy schedule. Big kudos to Kathryn,” he says, praising the actress.
Finding Joy in the Journey
Admittedly, Mauro shares that the main challenge of being a trainer is motivating and keeping clients consistent with their workouts. However, he finds joy in helping them reach their fitness goals and being with them on their transformation.
“Most of them come from different backgrounds. They all have a story, they have different personalities, different mindsets, so getting to know them through our workout sessions gives me a wider perspective. So It’s not just them learning from me, I learn from them as well,” Mauro shared.
His top tips for those looking to start their fitness journey? Find a good coach to guide you through the proper and safe movements. He adds, “Another way is to find a workout buddy or partner so this way you get to enjoy the suffering together and at least have a good time through the process,” he advises.
