Designer Ehrran Montoya shares with MEGA the inspirations behind SB19’s red-carpet looks

As the Kings of P-pop, the musical prowess and achievements of SB19 need no introduction. With top hits like “MAPA” and “GENTO,” the group rightfully earned the Voices of Asia Award in Seoul. But beyond their success in music, the group is highly revered for its standout styles and openness to the unconventional. No less was showcased at the Billboard Korea stage, where the members donned custom designs by renowned local designer Ehrran Montoya.

In an exclusive with MEGA, Ehrran reveals the inspirations behind their stunning creations and the story behind each look.

The Designer’s Edge

Known for his avante-garde approach to fashion, Ehrran Montoya marries textured elements and flow through his designs. Such is seen in the custom ensembles he made for each SB19 member who turned heads in hues of black, charcoal grey, and midnight blue.

Montoya’s masterpiece paid tribute to Filipino artistry. “We wanted to fuse elements of Filipino touch to the looks without making it too obvious,” shares Ehrran. Balancing traditional and contemporary styles, the designer carefully matched the materials such as abaca fibers with custom silver tinsel.

A Fashion Parade of Personality

Having dressed the P-Pop phenom for their 2024 Watsons Playlist performance, the designer knew what to do this time around. “The brief given to me by Rain Dagala was to create a custom ensemble highlighting the peak of SB19– dashing and dapper,” Montoya expresses. “I love working with stylists, and with Rain Dagala being on top of everything, it turned out really smooth as he already knows the personalities of each member.”

Despite the bold personalities Montoya wanted to portray, the designer ensured that the looks still maintained a sophisticated edge. “We didn’t plan to create looks that are too costume-y or, in some way, too cohesive. We [wanted] to highlight their different personalities using only silhouettes and materials, such as denim, brocade, fine wool, and silk, and merging with our very own textile: the abaca fabric.”

Apart from the talented Ehrran Montoya, stylists Rain Dagala and Em Millan of Team Rain x Em are to thank for their final looks.

Ultimately, the P-Pop group’s looks are a testament to their evolving personal style and a reflection of unique Filipino artistry. With continuous innovation—be it in the field of music or arts—there’s no telling what heights they’re reaching next. The only thing we’re sure of is their journey is far from over, and the world may need a bigger stage for more Filipino talent to shine.
