In a MEGA exclusive, celebrity makeup artists Jason Delos Reyes and Jake Galvez revealed their expert-approved practices and techniques for achieving a makeup-ready canvas
Let’s get one thing straight—makeup is only half the story. Behind every coveted skin has something to do with the plumping and priming preparation. “Consider skin preparation as the skeleton of a whole makeup look,” Jason Delos Reyes said as he explained the importance of the non-negotiable step. “It will determine the longevity and the finish of the whole look.” On top of that, Jake Galvez revealed, “It’s the secret to instantly hydrated and luminous skin.”

Prepping the skin goes over and beyond the concoction of toners and moisturizers. It takes selecting the right products, applying proper techniques, and improving one’s lifestyle. Curious? Below, Jason Delos Reyes and Jake Galvez detailed their best-kept practices for achieving a smooth canvas.
The best skin practice
“If you have a special event, it is best to do your usual professional skin care services a week before the date itself,” Jake Galvez prompted the best skin practice to adopt before the big day. “Getting a facial with diamond peel is the perfect way to refresh and hydrate the skin to assure that your skin is camera, stage, party, or travel-ready.” Pro tip: Don’t forget to integrate healthy habits along the skin treatment. Getting proper sleep and drinking enough water are foolproof ways to work on the glow from within.
The power of exfoliation
Exfoliation can bring so much wonder to the skin if done right. “Excessive dead skin often clings to any formula and can result in a cakey foundation as the day goes by,” Jason Delos Reyes punctuated. “It is best to exfoliate on or before the day,” Jake Galvez simply agreed. He added that it is the key to leaving the face smooth and ready for makeup. His other best-kept technique? Hydrating face sheet mask. “Using it before makeup application is a super effective way to get you that natural glow without having to put on too much highlighter.”
Take it from the pros
Skin preparation might sound like a straightforward process, but don’t rush. Instead, take your time. “If you are layering two to three products, make sure to have the skin absorb the product well before putting the next one on,” Galvez advised. “You can do this by doing circular motions during the application or using a facial roller. Use only the thinnest, fastest-absorbing skincare products that are used during the day. Some people use night creams before makeup, which is a common mistake. Night creams usually have the thickest formula and their purpose is focused on skin repair, and shouldn’t be used as a skin prep before makeup.”
As for selecting the right products? Delos Reyes reminded fans to listen to their skin needs first. “Don’t skip on assessing your skin type,” he mentioned. “Always remember that it’s best to work on products and formulas that cater to your skin. It’s the key to making the most out of the skin prep process.”
