Kim Chiu makes a series comeback with Fit Check: Confessions of an Ukay Queen—a show that weaves drama into the world of fashion
From Magkaribal and Ina, Kapatid, Anak to Sisterakas, fashion is back on the screen with Fit Check: Confessions of an Ukay Queen. The series stars Kim Chiu as Melanie, an aspiring designer who turns ukay pieces into eclectic ensembles. Daring to start anew after disaster strikes in their family-owned shop, Melanie discovers a new world of fashion that comes with dreams, drama, and dedication.

The eight-episode series features a multi-talented cast including Angel Aquino, Jake Ejercito, Kylie Verzosa, Kaladkaren, Frenchie Dy, Christopher De Leon, Liza Lorena, and more. This ensemble, coupled with the charm of a familiar plot to Filipinos, as well as our deep connection to fashion, actually made the series top the Prime Video charts as of July 9. With that, MEGA Entertainment delves into the reasons why Fit Check: Confessions of An Ukay Queen is truly worth your binge-watch today.
A homage to a dreamer’s roots
Actress Kim Chiu is no stranger to Melanie’s story as she, too, has the grit of her own character—the same quality that allowed her to thrive in the industry. Her deep connection to her persona was also a throwback to her prom memory, when Kim actually wore a dress from an ukay store.
Aside from Melanie, Angel Aquino’s character Georgina is another character to watch out for. Giving a different perspective on what it means to pursue your dreams, she proves that certain decisions can make or break your goals. That goes without saying that one’s life is part of that, too. Of course, fans are delighted as well that Angel has made a fashion drama comeback with Fit Check after starring in the 2010 series, Magkaribal.
Besides them, the chemistry of the whole cast translated well in the series. Though the eight-episode count kept the storytelling short and sweet, we wish that some characters were given more depth and exposure. That includes Stella played by Kylie Verzosa, as well as Kaladkaren’s character Barbie. If Fit Check ever sees a potential for more episodes or even a spin-off, these characters have the most potential to show their dynamic sides.
A fit check to Filipino couture and culture
In some episodes, fashion would take a backseat from time to time to make way for the conflicts that go beyond the confines of a clothing challenge or a fashion show. After watching the series, it is still safe to say that Fit Check: Confessions of an Ukay Queen tried its best to weave the gravity of fashion into the story.
Kim Chiu’s stylist Adrianne Concepcion even incorporated the tagpi-tagpi style in the actress’ wardrobe with pieces from Ehrran Montoya and Hamu.
Meanwhile, fashion designer Neric Beltran worked in the series as one of the stylists, together with Abby Paulino and Jilla Sara. In his Instagram post, Beltran shared the process behind Melanie’s first showcase of crocheted clothing. He revealed that local artisans from Baguio made it all possible. Taking a progressive stance towards a more sustainable fashion scene, Beltran also seeked the help of Mervin Lazaro, a fashion sustainability consultant.
Aside from the aforementioned, Fit Check embedded more appearances of those who keep our fashion and art scene alive in the country. This included talents from different agencies such as PMAP and Mercator, designers Mitch Dulce and Michael Leyva, actor Jon Santos, and many more.
Admittedly, a series can only do so much tribute to a long-running thread of experiences from our couture and culture. Perhaps if there was more space and time or yet another platform, it would have been fun to involve more local artisans and more raw takes on the local ukay scene in the Philippines. With Fit Check: Confessions of an Ukay Queen taking the first step towards that path, we are surely looking forward to what’s next for the marriage of fashion and media.
