This celebrity hairstylist and entrepreneur is making healthy hair everybody’s business
This is an excerpt from MEGA’s December 2022 – January 2023 Artist Confidential.
Everyone has the potential to have celebrity-worthy hair in the hands of Mark Anthony Rosales. He has styled the hair of Lovi Poe, Max Collins, and Gabbi Garcia, with whom he has been working since the actress started in the industry.
Before Rosales was personally attending to the tresses of A-listers, he was in the corporate world. But one faithful day, during a MEGA Fashion Crew event—where he attended as a plus-one—he met a salon manager. By the end of the night, he landed a job as an operations manager at the salon.
Running administrative work is in his DNA—having graduated with a business and marketing degree—and through it, he was getting a bird’s-eye view of the creative world of hair.
“At that time, I wanted a change, so the staff and my team were convincing me to learn more about hairstyling,” Rosales admits. “But I was still hesitant because I didn’t see myself as an artist. I was more business-minded.”
But it seemed like hairstyling was always in the cards for him. During that time, he was also in a relationship with Jason Delos Reyes, Gabbi Garcia’s makeup artist, who still works with him: “He was pushing me to make it my profession, since I wanted to get into the fashion industry. He helped me to mold myself as an artist.”
The 33-year-old artist also credits his success to his staff, who helped him learn the different techniques that he needed during magazine photoshoots. Plus, they helped him build strong relationships with clients.
“Starting in the industry is not an easy journey,” he says. “There were times when Gabbi was on the rise and they wanted a more tenured glam team for her, but she stood up for us.” What followed was a domino effect on his career: the side hustles turned into big breaks.
