The Voyou is the must-have accessory in a collection that cross-pollinates French and American style codes. A modern vision
Illinois-born designer Matthew M. Williams has brought a new face to the Givenchy legacy since his appointment in June 2020. With respect to the house’s codes and loyalty to the Hubert de Givenchy legacy, while also bringing a new kind of American cool, he reined in the help of American model Gigi Hadid for the iconic campaign.
“I wanted to revisit fashion archetypes with a kind of new language and a playful attitude,” said Williams. “With the Voyou, you know at a glance that it’s Parisian, but it’s at home wherever it goes, and it makes an everyday style statement that has true staying power.”
Williams has translated this vision into a sleek style of a hobo bag that is posh and expansive with a widened envelope of convenience. Williams explains that, “Everything began with Hubert. I looked into his archives with my adopted Parisian eye, but also with my instinctive American eye. The cultural exchange reflected in this collection has been a long time in the making.”
All in the details
The Voyou, which translates to “bad boy” in French, is a new entry in the Givenchy lexicon, blending the language of a lady’s handbag with an easy, biker attitude. Glistening in ever-so-subtle, grained calfskin, Voyou asserts a soft touch of luxury. With luxurious turned edges, it fuses polish with the lightness and convenience of a hobo. Inside, the zippered compartments are impeccably optimized for storing your keys, smartphone, and wallet.
The Voyou folds over naturally, adapting to its wearer’s form. To get that more desirable and highly adaptive handbag without compromising its charm, it can be styled in long or short modes, including hand-carry or cross-body wear.
Adjustable straps are embossed with metallic Givenchy lettering and a play on the house’s distinctive hardware embellishments—a new etched buckle, sliders, and a slightly beveled version of the designer’s signature d-ring—give it a cool, jewel-like allure. These elements subtly re-create the house’s “V” emblem while highlighting the leather’s glossy, tactile feel, adding a splash of Parisian casualness to any outfit, day or night.
