Gucci Explores the Human Condition In Their Fall/Winter 2019 Collection

Ornate looks through eighties tailoring, a motley of masks, and their new Ultrapace sneaker forged with character were the stars of the runway

The world is our stage and we are all performers playing our defined roles. Our human experiences and personal world views are created and defined on this shared single-act play. Our individuality is expressed through our face, or in a theatrical form, through our mask that serves as a projection of our authentic self. It isn’t just a piece for concealment, but a canvas for the freedom of expression. The mask is a bearer of divergent human impulses. It exposes and conceals, manifests and protects. It is an ambiguous representation of our uniqueness amid equals. This world stage view, originally presented by Hannah Arendt in 1958, has become the core of the Gucci Fall/Winter 2019 collection.

The runway featured models with peculiar masks such as a golden eye patch, a baby blue cover up, a curtain of crystal beads, and a lemon-tinted visor that explored various character facets. These served as thematic accessories to the collection that exudes eighties tailoring. Baggy and oversized fits characterized the outerwear, trousers, and dresses inspirited through a bold mixture of colors and patterns.

There’s eccentricity in the excess, and the collection had a great mix of whimsical pieces that added character such as crisp knee pads, polished gold chains, tartan gloves, and spiked collars. However, the collection also showed restraint as a number of pieces remain accessible through its rather reserved approach with a conventional cut and solid palette, alluding to the contrast of human behavior–vanity and modesty.

The coordination of oddball design elements and materials as the central visual theme of the collection were centralized in the debut of Gucci’s Ultrapace sneaker during the fashion show. Now, the Ultrapace family has been expanded to include a new mix of colors, materials, and a mid-top variant.

The vintage soul breathes through its patchwork appearance of suede, mesh, and animal prints; and lightly distressed effect. Its logo details applied throughout different parts of the shoe, such as the capital “G” near the toe box, the interlocking double “G” by the laces and sole, and different iterations of the “Gucci” name all around, adds to its appeal as a product with an authentic and distinctive character.

In the Philippines, Gucci is exclusively distributed by Stores Specialists, Inc., and is located at Greenbelt 4 and Shangri-La Plaza East Wing. Visit or follow @ssilifeph on Instagram for more information.
