From Florence Pugh’s creative updo to FKA Twigs’ structured installment, we listed some of the most memorable updos seen on celebrities

Actress Florence Pugh exactly knows how to make a hair statement. In March, she fronted the beauty headlines with her chic micro bangs and structured updo. But it wasn’t the first time the world has seen an experimental hairstyle on the carpet. In 2022, Alexa Demie made a serious case for flapper-inspired finger waves. And from there, we can’t help but wonder—has hair architecture met its modern interpretation?

It’s quite difficult to imagine hair architecture outside of hair expos and editorial shoots. But thanks to artists like Peter Lux and Louis Souvestre, the experimental take on hair has made its way to the awards night, runway shows, and even to the biggest fashion events in the calendar. And while the category is undeniably interesting, it only proves that beauty has fully shifted its focus on creativity and self-expression.

A look into hair architecture

Hair architecture is characterized by creative, structured, and unorthodox updos that command attention. Think more of haute couture but for hair. It’s experimental yet polished, expressive yet chic, and unconventional yet artistic. It doesn’t conform to any restrictions, but rather creates an open space to play with shapes and textures. Hair architecture is an artist’s imaginative vision brought to real life.

It’s beguiling to know how hair architecture is accomplished. Perhaps it’s physics or it’s the work of hairspray. Who knows? But one thing is for sure: It thoroughly deserves the attention, especially after seeing it from these celebrities.

Florence Pugh is certainly the poster girl of hair architecture. In fact, the actress donned show-stopping hairstyles on the red carpet. At the A Good Person premiere, the actress showcased a subversive twist to a clean bun. Surprisingly, it was a last minute decision, too. “Alex and I had to do a super quick switch and turned it around in 40 mins from start to finish,” Peter Lux shared in a post. “When the pressure is on the most magical things happen.”

FKA Twigs

The chic yet unconventional hairstyle has made it to the steps of the Met, too. As seen on FKA Twigs, the artist showcased a structural updo by celebrity hairstylist Louis Souvestre. The artist polished the look with a lacquered finish, which created a crown-like illusion. It’s equal parts chic and expressive—the kind of style that effortlessly commanded attention without going overboard. Moreover, it certainly set the hairstyle standard of the future.

Taylor Russell

Taylor Russell never fails to deliver unforgettable hair moments, but her Bones and All premiere creative updo is a standout. “This hair was so fun to create and kinda just happened within 30 minutes,” Peter Lux decoded Taylor Russell’s hairstyle. “A can of super extra strong AF holds hairspray and a bundle of hair extensions the day before the event.”
