Here’s How You Can Thrift Responsibly

By

Thrifting isn’t a new thing in the fashion industry. It’s always been the gold mine for those who look religiously through the long aisles of racks just to score a quality piece. But in the digital age, a majority have put up their stores in their chosen social media apps to make it more accessible. We can’t deny the sudden peak of popularity of thrift stores and pop-ups in recent years, but we can’t help but wonder if there’s even a better way to go about it. With that, we listed down a few tips on how you can be a responsible shopper while you thrift.

Meaningful buying or bandwagoning

At this point, your social media is probably swamped with various accounts that have been participating in pop-ups. They usually post their curated pieces for anticipation purposes, as well as showing videos of the crowds flocking each store, but you do have to ask yourself if you’re in it to actually look for something or just to say that you had an experience in thrift shopping.

Thrifting is beyond the clothes because it’s these small contributions that make a difference towards sustainability and the rewear movement. But if you’re there to just join in on the trend, best if you mentally prepare yourself because while it may get overwhelming, those who thrift constantly also come in with the right mindset about its positive impact, and you should, too.

Curated or branded

Ever since people became aware of the precious gems in the pit, a lot have been more active in digging through piles of clothes. While there’s nothing wrong with looking for designer brands, it loses its purpose of simply reusing pieces because other clothes tend to be overlooked.

Make sure to do your research before deciding on your go-to stores. Many curated stores would post brands and mark it up for a higher price compared to the wholesale, which for others, might not be the best case. So if you’re thinking of heading to another store, be sure to be open to any piece they have on hand.

On a budget or splurging

As mentioned, purchase planning is the best discipline if you’re thinking of thrifting. Since it can get overwhelming, having a concrete style will help you narrow down the many choices these stores have to offer. On top of that, it’ll also help you with budgeting if you already know how many you’ll be buying.
