The makeup artist also reveals that seeing the approved look moved the actress to tears.

Lipstick is undeniably the most transformative and quintessential category in beauty. As a symbol of versatility, power, and femininity, a swipe can say so much without saying a word. It translates the same way in movies or series. The right shade goes beyond completing the look; it can define a character and can embody a representation.

There’s a long list of iconic shades that made their own moments on screen, but for this story, we wanted to give light to a heroine close to home—Darna. As Jane De Leon unveils her modern take on the character’s classic look, we’ve looked into some notable beauty details that make a mark on Filipino beauty history.

Naming the Artist

Joel “Varda” Atienza is no stranger to the TV and film makeup industry. Over the years, he was the brain behind several noteworthy looks, including the iconic Amor Powers in the late Pangako Sa’yo series. “I can describe myself as a storyteller when it comes to makeup,” he shares. Coming up with the final look also goes through a lot of study. “I always start by going through the script, then go through the character bible.”

On Creating the Final Look for Darna

Creating the look is no easy feat. Joel revealed that they went through three different makeup looks before they earned the approval of the show’s executive committee. “Jane cried during the look test,” he shares “She didn’t get to see herself portraying Darna. So when it was approved, she really cried”.

Joel also reveals that one popular eye makeup technique he loves using on Jane: “I actually love highlighting her eyes. She actually has droopy eyes, and since foxy eyes are a staple in beauty trends, I applied that to her”.

Darna’s Iconic Lip Color

Darna’s look wouldn’t be complete without a signature lip color. “I also collaborate with her (Jane) on the color of the lips. If you look closely, we use two different shades to get the most flattering shade. ” For her most talked about official poster, Joel used a gradient lip technique, featuring a combination of Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink Lipstick in #20 Pioneer and Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution in M.I Kiss (formerly known as Bond Girl).

To achieve the look, apply a rich red shade on the inner corner of your upper lips. Use a dabbing motion to soften the color. Then, using a lip brush, blend a warm-toned nude hue towards the rest of your lips.
