Getting set for your first tattoo
First, give some serious consideration to the style you’re going for. Charles underlined the importance of choosing an appropriate and meaningful first tattoo because of the lasting impression it will make on you. Second, he warned that getting a tattoo can be painful and that it’s best to go into the experience with realistic expectations. Lastly, he stressed the need to consider only one’s own feelings while deciding whether or not to have a tattoo. Though it’s been said many times before, Charles echoed the sentiment that your tattoo is yours, not anyone else’s.
The ideal placement and design
When it comes to design, Charles thinks it’s best to come up with a concept that has some sort of personal significance to you. It could represent a significant achievement, the completion of a difficult task, or just something you’d like to have cause for celebration. When it comes to placement, opinions on whether to hide or reveal a tattoo can vary greatly and must be considered. But he recommended having it done on the arms if the wearer is interested in showing it off.
What to look for in a tattoo artist
Charles gave three pieces of advice to consider when looking for a tattoo artist, the first of which is to ensure that your desired design is compatible with your artist’s style. Second, it’s recommended that you go with an established tattoo artist who has a solid portfolio. Last but not least, it’s a good idea to read up on the artist’s feedback online. After all, you wouldn’t want your first time to be a bust, would you?
Several steps one must do prior to getting inked
Charles shared three points to remember before getting inked. First, since alcohol thins the blood and could cause excessive bleeding during the session, it should be avoided at least 24 hours before the scheduled session. Second, get seven to eight hours of sleep to lessen the impact of the pain. Lastly, stay hydrated before, during, and after getting a tattoo to ensure that the ink correctly registers on your skin.
Normal costs of getting a tattoo
The well-known tattoo artist said that pricing is different for each tattoo shop. He disclosed on the spot that his rates start at PHP 25,000 per session. However, Charles did share that the going rate for a small tattoo here in Manila ranges from PHP 3,500 to PHP 5,000. He also mentioned that if you believe that the price aligns with the value you will get from your artist’s creations and services, then he encourages you to make the decision without hesitation.
Care instructions for a fresh tattoo
Charles stressed the importance of proper care for your tattoo both before and after getting it done. He recommended abstaining from alcohol for at least 24 hours, apart from staying out of the sun, refraining from working out or sweating excessively, not swimming in pools or oceans—all for at least two weeks. And of course, not scratching the tattoo while it is still healing to prevent complications.
