The Philippines’ first fashion design competition is making a grand comeback. Can you make the cut? Check out the official mechanics for MEGA’s Young Designers Competition Philippines below
The Philippines’ best fashion magazine has a mission to go beyond the bounds of convention and cement impact in the local fashion industry. To support this goal, MEGA has an unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence—from platforming the industry’s most celebrated designers to spotlighting fresh talent that embodies the brand. This is where the MEGA Young Designers Competition (YDC) comes in.
Made possible by BYS, the YDC is coming back to life this year in the form of a competition among the country’s freshest designers. If you’re a young designer with big dreams and the skills to back it up, this is for you.
Read ahead for the mechanics of the competition and to check if you’re eligible to enter.
ELIGIBILITY
- Filipinos between the ages of 18 and 35
- Currently residing in the Philippines at the time of submission
- Each participant is only allowed to submit one portfolio
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
To enter MEGA’s Young Designers Competition, you need to submit three things:
- Portfolio
- Three-minute video
- Mood board
The portfolio should be submitted in PDF format and include a brief introduction of yourself, your educational background in fashion, age, address, and any relevant fashion internships and awards. Following that, to prove that the submitted entry are are original sketches, the portfolio should include five of your best fashion pieces in the form of design drafts with sketches and swatches.
Each portfolio submission may include high-resolution photos of the fashion pieces worn by models and mannequins, but this is optional. Additionally, these designs must not have been previously showcased in any fashion event.
Meanwhile, the video and mood board submission should depict your interpretation and explanation of the theme: Filipino Innovation and Sustainability.
DEADLINES
MECHANICS FOR ELIMINATION ROUNDS
The Top 15 designers will be selected and invited to the MEGA Studio to physically present their work to the judges. These contestants will be tasked to bring in their best work, together with a physical copy of their submitted portfolio. They will then be asked to present before the panel of judges their mood board to further explain their interpretation of the theme. On the same day, the judges will deliberate and announce the Top 6 contestants who will advance to the next round.
These six contestants will then be tasked with creating an eight-piece collection within the budget MEGA will provide. Notably, prior to the final show, there will be one mentoring day featuring alumni of the Young Designers Competition to guide and support the six contestants in their creative process. Finally, this collection will be presented on the culminating night of the competition.
To recap, these are the phases of the competition:
- Call for submissions from November 2023 to January 25, 2024
- Announcement of submission results to welcome the Top 15
- Presentation and elimination to form the Top 6
- Preparation for the final show
- Fashion show and announcement of the winner
