The ’90s were all about matte skin, brick brown lips, and statement hair—here’s how you can create those same iconic looks in a more refined and updated manner

CHIC A LÁ CHRISTY
If there’s one thing the nineties taught us well, it’s how an updo can make or break your entire look. Inspired by THE supermodel Christy Turlington—whose version usually featured long bangs cascading to one side—this year’s style is center parted with an unraveling of sorts at the bun. The key to getting this look right is to make it appear naturally undone at the top. To do this, create a neat bun then pull out some pieces from random areas with a tip tail comb
DRAWN TO DREW
Visible lip liner was en vogue in the ’90s, and was seen on everyone from Drew Barrymore in her bold Guess ads to Dutch supermodel Karen Mulder in her larger-than-life Versace ads. A new way to wear this trend is to line lips with a softer shade and in a much thinner manner so that it tastefully complements your lip color. Make sure to use a lip liner from the same color family so you get a tone on-tone effect
THE CINDY EFFECT
Big hair, pronounced eyes, and contoured cheeks were synonymous to Cindy Crawford, thanks to her memorable Revlon ads. Back then, it was about making eyes look more alive and giving hair unparalleled volume. These days, the way to glam up your look is to veer away from stiff hair products and opt for ones that provide a lift whilst allowing movement. For eyes, clumpy mascara is no longer chic but long-wearing and deep black is the way to go
KATE THE GREAT
Kate Moss’ makeup looks were all the rage then and continue to inspire beauty influencers today. Pale matte skin, kohl-rimmed eyes, and chalky brown lips are definitely a mood, and the way to wear these now is to hold back on the intensity of the pigments. For example, instead of using a heavy and dark creamy eyeliner, opt for a dark eyeshadow to line your peepers. The goal here is to forgo the harsh lines and embrace a softer version of the grunge-y look Kate made famous
