Drag has always been deeply rooted in our culture. In the 16th century, some males would assume the role of babaylans by mimicking the appearance and mannerisms of females. With the help of Comedy King Dolphy, drag was introduced in our mainstream media with films like Ang Tatay Kong Nanay.
As drag’s history continues to evolve in the country, a new chapter is officially sashaying its way! Drag Race Philippines is finally premiering on August 17! Last May, Jiggly Caliente shared the good news that she will be a permanent judge in the show.
Today, it is finally revealed that following RuPaul’s footsteps as host of the Drag Race franchise is actor-impersonator-artist Paolo Ballesteros!
Coming from a bloodline of artists, Paolo has shown his artistry through impersonating famous figures such as Marilyn Monroe and Mariah Carey; and even local stars like Maja Salvador and Marian Rivera. From Eat Bulaga, the star is now navigating towards a more global main stage with the upcoming show.
In the official reveal of the host, Paolo is wearing a Job Dacon creation. The design features a serpentine silhouette with pink and purple shades of the sky, with two Manila landmarks—the Manila City Hall Tower Clock and the Rizal Monument—printed on the garment. Gumamelas and roses bloom also adorn the gown.
According to an interview with PEP, the designer shares, “Manila, holding both historical value, and countless sights, serves as our country’s capital. It is just fitting for our Drag Race Philippines host.”
Job Dacon completed the look in about two weeks.
