Now more than ever, love team tandems on television and film are coming in all shapes and forms. In the realm of Philippine media, creatives and consumers are now more open to make space for these partnerships. This way, there is more room for conversation on why and how these pairings came about. Part of the talk today includes actors who get to work with more than one partner in the course of their careers. Case in point, Julia Barretto.

The leading lady
Over the span of her career, she has worked opposite actors such as Iñigo Pascual, Enrique Gil, Kenzo Gutierrez, Ronnie Alonte, and Xian Lim. In 2016, she found her reel-to-real match with Joshua Garcia through their project Vince & Kath & James. Recently, she also starred in two films alongside Carlo Aquino and Diego Loyzaga. Her current real-life partner, Gerald Anderson, was also her leading man in the 2019 movie Between Maybes. This time around, she is sharing the screen with actor Aga Muhlach, who is 27 years her senior.
This coming February 7, the two will debut as a pairing for Ikaw Pa Rin Ang Pipiliin Ko, previously titled as Forgetting Canseco. Written and directed by Denise O’Hara, the film will center on music as the binding force of the two.
Leading a conversation
Because of Julia and Aga’s partnership, this has elicited talks on the concept of age gaps between characters and even co-stars. Many raised and noted that more than two decades ago, the veteran actor already worked with Julia’s aunt, Claudine Barretto, for the 2002 motion picture, Kailangan Kita. And in 1985, Gretchen Barretto and Aga worked together for Miguelito: Batang Rebelde.
To some, the glaring age difference between the veteran actor and the young actress prompts a negative picture in reality and the media industry. However, others argue that they are only playing certain roles and those actually called for this type of partnership. While the film has yet to disclose its premise from the trailer, it certainly has prompted a dialogue on age gaps in the realm of media, one worth talking about for both creatives and their audiences.
