Big, bold, and legendary—the Met Gala has always been known for such fashion moments. After an immense amount of time and effort for preparation, big names from different industries attended the Met Gala donning looks that range from elegant to extravagant. However, this year’s Met being titled as “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” has a different story to tell as it has a more straightforward message, which is to simply honor the late designer.

From Cara Delavigne, Devon Aoki, to Gisele Bündchen, these personalities were not only clad in Karl Lagerfeld’s vast creative vision, but their presence also honors the late creative director as a good friend.

It’s as if memories with Karl Lagerfeld flooded Cara Delevingne’s mind before taking a step to Met Gala’s coveted staircase. When Cara, who embodied her iteration of a classic Lagerfeld look with a white button down, was asked if she can share her favorite Chanel memory, the actress expressed that it was hard to choose one as she went around the world with Karl. But one that she remembers about the visionary and her good friend is that he was a man that looked towards the future. Karl Lagerfeld influenced so many people and industries, and with that, he will surely be remembered for generations.

The supermodel entered the halls of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in a sheer black corset dress—a far cry from her giant Versace puffer last year. Gigi Hadid was in attendance wearing pearl accessories to honor Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy. Her look is a custom Givenchy—Matthew William’s nod to honor Karl Lagerfeld’s fashion legacy. It had a dramatically long train, hip cutouts, and a cinched center.  

Devon Aoki

Devon Aoki shared that her most memorable story with Karl was when she walked barefoot in her first show with him. This goes back to when she was first introduced on the runway as one of Chanel’s brides. Now, she honored him in an ensemble by Jeremy Scott. According to the designer, the look he created symbolizes Devon and Karl’s shared history—from the use of black and white hues to the wing elements, which were based on a memory of the last time Devon, Karl, and Jeremy were together.

Before entering the stunning Karl Lagerfeld exhibit, Naomi Campbell, who was clad in a classic number from Chanel’s SS10 Couture, shared that despite this being her 16th Met Gala, this is nothing short of meaningful as it is for Karl Lagerfeld. She met the creative director when she was only 16 years old, and Naomi recognized Karl as someone who gives each of his muses their own Chanel character. He was the type of person who would constantly ask his models what they wanted to wear and if they were happy with what they were wearing.

Kendall Jenner

Kendall Jenner was among the final muses hailed by Karl Lagerfeld before his passing. Thus, she is a testament to the enduring legacy of their collaboration in the world of fashion. The trendsetting fashion figure made her remarkable appearance at the Met Gala wearing a Marc Jacobs creation. She bared volume, silhouette, and modernity in her look, which are all part of Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy. 

Adut Akech

Adut Akech is a Sudanese model that is known to be the second black woman to become Chanel’s couture bride on the runway. In honor of Karl, she wore a custom Carolina Herrera to the Met Gala. Before cementing her role at present and becoming one of Vogue’s May 2023 cover stars, Adut Akech is one of the many models that was brought with Karl Lagerfeld’s success.

Two days before the Met Gala, Vittoria Ceretti shared on Instagram a carousel of her memories with Karl Lagerfeld, and shared how much she misses the fashion legend who became her good friend. Vittoria ended her touching message by proclaiming her admiration for the esteemed creative. That’s why it is no surprise that she was one of the muses who came early to the Met Gala’s staircase. She wore a full black look by Balenciaga with embedded details of sparkle on the entire tube gown.

According to reports, Karl Lagerfeld had a long-term relationship with China. That’s why when he passed away in 2019, many expressed their sadness as they remembered the loss of a person with an incomparable reputation in the fashion industry. During this time, Liu Wen expressed her working experience with the Chanel creative director. At present, she is in attendance at the 2023 Met Gala as she honors Karl while donning a custom Tory Burch moment with Chanel’s iconic white Camellia flowers.

What Anok Yai wore to the Met Gala honoring Karl Lagerfeld is a sight to behold. She arrived in a gold-sequined structured dress with drips of silver illusion towards the ground—a very straightforward nod to the late creative’s eye for futuristic looks. Her dress is a Prabal Gurung masterpiece that was inspired by one of Karl’s pieces from Chanel’s 1993 Haute Couture collection.

The Brazilian model aligned her solo return to the Met Gala in time to honor the legacy of Karl Lagerfeld. To honor the late visionary’s passing, the model wore a vintage Chanel couture that featured a white silk tulle with stripe and sequin detailing. She even made a head-turning fashion moment as she twirled in her feathery cape in front of the cameras.
